We are all miserable people. I'll be honest, there were some moments in the first half where I caught myself being miserable. "Why did he throw it away? How'd he miss that block? Can anyone cover Cobbs?" This was certainly not the prettiest game of all time, but it was just fine for a season opener. I have heard more whining and complaining these past few days than normal in Columbus. JT sucks, the receivers suck, the secondary sucks, get rid of the coaches, blah blah blah. Many is Buckeye Nation will call me an apologist but let's get real.
1) USC was in a dogfight with Western Michigan at home
2) Texas got straight up beat by an inferior Maryland squad
3) Washington farted around with Rutgers
4) Louisville and the reigning Heisman winner had to fend off Purdue.
5) South Florida struggled with Stony Brook.
6) Baylor lost to an abstract construct.
7) UNLV fell in the greatest upset of all time against a guy named Howard
...but JT didn't complete every pass and Indiana crossed the 50...
I will dissect the Buckeyes game (briefly) and I will knock some of the issues we absolutely had, but we beat a decent (not great, but decent--I'd say 6-7 wins but the schedule is tough) IU squad at home, at night, in one of the biggest games in their history BY 28 FREAKING POINTS. Honestly, this is a coach's dream game. Comfortable win, some adversity, no turnovers, plenty of teachable moments.
Offense: B
While my intro defended JT a great deal, this was not the performance I was hoping for. It wasn't a bad performance like everyone would have you believe, but I was hoping for more. I think the main issue is his absolute aversion to turnovers. Don't get me wrong, that's a great thing...but you need to take some risks and he's still hesitant. It will (should?!?) come as the year progresses, but I was hoping to see a little more Brett Favre gunslinging (by the way, if he does start taking risks, I'm going to go ballistic when he gets skewered for throwing a pick or two). Also, stop arguing that the passing yards are mostly YAC. JT just needs to loosen up on a few deep balls a game and we'll be fine. The athletes at wide receiver aren't Calvin Johnsons, they're Percy Harvins (YAC type receivers). JT is built for that. On the "hey, that's cool" side, meet J.K. Dobbins. What a welcome debut in Bloomington. I wish he didn't have to break so many tackles, but I like the fact he did it. The big question is what's up with Weber. I really don't think he'll be Wally Pipped, but the talking heads have anointed Dobbins as the second coming. Don't forget how freakishly good Mike Weber was/is. I would not be surprised in the slightest for a 60-40 Weber split in touches next week (and that's ok). The biggest problem is sharing the load with all this talent. With regard to the receivers, we saw the entire gamut. Paris Campbell really fast and good and Paris Campbell dropsy drop. The halftime adjustments saw these guys getting many more touches in the second half with 10 yard passes...and that's JT's specialty. Keep feeding them and they'll be fine...but don't drop perfectly throw bombs...your QB needs credit for those.
Defense: B+
Again, definitely things to clean up, but not a bad first outing. The secondary is a green as...something that is really green (grass is too lame) and they got better as the game progressed. Also, Simmie Cobbs is really freaking good (might be the best receiver we face in the regular season). The defensive line was as good as advertised and will just be a nightmare for teams all year. There were a few miscommuncation plays but that's expected early on. I heard the broadcast (and Buckeye twitter) wondering how Lagow was throwing into tight windows so why can't JT? Just remember that Lagow also threw 2 picks. That's the trade off. Be careful what you wish for (to restate, I would like a little more risk, but not as much as most....there is a delicate balance). I would be remiss if I didn't mention one of the greatest plays of all time (that didn't count). Take a bow Robert Landers. That's a Touchdown in my eyes.
Special Teams: B+
No missed PATs, No missed FGs, no fumbled punts (woot), no kickoffs out of bounds (also woot). I'm still concerned with the risk reward of kicking short and attempting to pin people inside the 25. It works a lot, but is that extra 5 yards worth it when they break a decent return every once in a while. I'm more conservative on the kickoff and prefer to boot it into the endzone every time. I recall IU had a good return once, but it was a few days ago. Overall, nothing stands out on special teams, which is usually a good thing (take note FSU).
Coaching: B
Nice debut for the new offensive coaches. Not perfect, but nice. I thought the halftime adjustments on both sides of the ball were fantastic which is a real testament to the talent on the coaching roster. Kevin Wilson didn't go into a shell when things weren't working, but he tweaked until he found something that worked. Defensive coaches seemed to see the man defense wasn't super hot in the first half so threw in some more zone later. There were still some growing pains there, but outscoring an opponent 36-7 in the second half shows the dedication to training and concept. Still want more progress from JT but it was a ok for game one with these receivers. The decisions to go on 4th down were both correct decisions but the little jet sweep to Hill was a very curious playcall. I'm glad Urban still knows basic math, but the play call on 4th and short should be a simple one. They got cute and it cost them.
Overall: B+
Once again, 28 point win on the road, at night, in a hostile (sort of) environment (more than a normal IU game) in the first game of the season vs. a decent team with nothing to lose. Buckeyes weren't uber sharp and there are certainly gaps to fill, but I'm happy we had a real test for these young freshman. Oklahoma was trotting up and down the field last week, but I don't think they learned anything or got better last week. Indiana provided a chance for the Buckeyes to get better and get fired up for one of the 3 biggest games on their calendar. Game 1 to Game 2 usually yields the most improvement and I'm pumped for next week.

Grading the Bucks: Week 12--Michigan State
No. Excuses.
The finger pointing has begun in Columbus, but make no mistake, this was a total team effort. From the coaches, to the QB, to the RB, to the WR, to the lines, to the defense...no one is safe.
Offense: F
This was one of the most inept offensive performances by a Buckeye squad I've ever seen (the only one that comes close is 2004 Iowa--and that team was quite different). If one unit must shoulder the bulk of the blame, it has to be the offensive line. They were simply atrocious in this game. Don't get me wrong, the Spartan D-line is very good and played an excellent game, but the trenches often determine the game, and the Spartans clearly outschemed and out'desired' the Bucks. The line couldn't open up running lanes, couldn't protect JT for more than 2 seconds, and was simply abused. Which brings me to the simple complaint, 'Why didn't Zeke get more carries?' Should he have? Maybe. Was this a horrendous oversight by the coaches? Absolutely not. Zeke refers to the power plays in which we 'gashed the Spartan D'. He must have been watching a different game. There was nowhere to run. Again, should your best player be given more at-bats? Probably, but that doesn't address the 400lb gorilla of Shilique Calhoun and the D-line completely shutting Zeke down. That isn't really on Zeke, but moreso on the O-line, but the team is a unit and the coaches need to look at the big picture. The biggest flaw in the gameplan was utilizing Barrett on called runs over and over. He had one or two successful plays, but not much room to run in general. JT again made me look bad with another bad performance. The conditions didn't help but he chose to tuck and run too quickly in my opinion. Would Cardale have been better? Maybe but probably not. The pocket was collapsing so fast (see O-line struggles) that Cardale's indecisiveness would have resulted in sacks rather than 'oh crap' 1 yard runs by JT. Maybe, just maybe, we should have attacked Sparty's weakness of the secondary. The weather didn't help but we threw deep 2 times. Once, was to a wide open Braxton who was overthrown due to horrible pass protection and the other was against the wind in which Thomas had to prevent the interception. Thomas, Braxton, Marshall, etc. are better downfield receivers but the Meyer scheme likes the quick screens...doesn't help when your receivers can't catch the ball.
Defense: B-
Only giving up 17 points to a top 10 team is a pretty good day, but not good enough. The downgrade is for two major issues. First, we were going against backup QB's in the muck. Why are the safeties 15 yards off the line of scrimmage? MSU dared the Bucks to beat them over the top and we never tried. Why didn't we do the same? If the backup hits it downfield, tip the cap, but allowing 200+ rushing yards (albeit against a really good team) when you know they are running the ball is a real problem. The second issue is the lack of mental focus. Every week, this team seems to roll the ball out there and expect to win based on the enormous talent gap (and yes, it is there). Bosa had 3 HUGE offside penalties brought on by lack of focus. Wipe those off the board, and I think the W is on the good guys end. Think I'm going to far? one in particular was on a failed 4th and 8 making it 4th and 3 which was converted leading to a TD...seems pretty relevant in this game. Oh yeah, that was the 3rd one. How do you not adjust? Focus on what happened and learn. Fool me once.... The secondary was fine, but the didn't have to do anything. Perry got beat on the PA to the fullback for the touchdown but as I say, PA to the fullback is open 100% of the time (I may need to check the numbers, but sounds right). He made a nice tackle but too late. Of all the Buckeyes who saw their careers in the Show come to an end on Saturday, Perry is the only one who had a semblance of a decent game.
Special Teams: B-
A whole lot of 'eh' here other than the spectacular 5 yard punt by the normally solid Cam Johnston. Most of his punts were fine, but that gem, while it didn't lead to points, bears note. Hey! No kicks out of bounds and no missed kicks! Success!
Coaching: F
I'm gonna be that guy...I don't blame the coaching staff for not running Zeke repeatedly into a brick wall. I would have given him a few more carries as opposed to the designed JT runs, but they were absolutely crazy to avoid the Bollman offense. I will question the lack of stretching the field (or at least pretending to to back the safeties off). Also, what happened to the option? JT generally runs it well although he had a few weird decisions in this game. It all seemed to boil down to straight Zeke, straight JT run, or one read JT then take off (that's Cardale's job). Defensive coaching was ok but to not cheat up with the safeties was a mistake to aid in the run game. The biggest mistake from the coaches was not having the team prepared. There was no gameplan, no motivation, no fire, no nothing. We got complacent and it bit us...and that's on the coaches. Don't get me wrong, the players sucked too, but the lack of fire is a lack of leadership both within and outside the huddle.
Overall: F
You play to win the game. We didn't. Everyone on that sideline contributed to the loss. Everyone. This may be one of the most talented Buckeye teams in history, but because of this inexcusable performance, they will (likely) be an after thought in the annals of Buckeye lore. That's a shame, but the truth. You're remembered how you finish. Last year, the team finished with a chip on their shoulder. This year, the team flamed out amid a finger pointing, blaming, whine-fest. You want to make a statement? There's only one thing left. Pound Michigan into the ground so far that Harbaugh will regret leaving the University of San Diego let alone the Niners. No mercy. Or...come out flat, and be remembered as one of the biggest wastes of talent in recent memory. The choices are yours and your alone.
GO OHIO!! BEAT MICHIGAN!!
Zeke: No
Don't you love the talking heads lauding Zeke for his postgame comments? How many former players are siding with the stud RB? Crickets. Was he right in what he said? Maybe, but I'm not 100%. Was he right to say it? NO. NO. NO. This is the antithesis of a leader. You have a problem with the coach, bring it up with him in his office. You don't air the dirty laundry in the media. Ever. I don't care if he was completely right and the world knew it. You don't throw your coaches/team under the bus. EVER.
But he's just speaking his feelings...NO.
But he should have gotten more touches...NO.
But he's earned the right...NO
Imagine saying those things with Woody as the coach. If I'm a player on the team, I lost some respect for Zeke shining the spot light on himself. Players and coaches give lame answers to the media because that's how it's done. If I'm Urban, I 100% sit him for the start of the game. No, I don't suspend him. He's earned the right to screw up, but actions have consequences. You sit him for the start, not for his sake, but for the team's. No one...NO ONE is bigger than the program. Again, we're entitled to stumble but actions have consequences (a fact lost in our society today). Imagine you have the world's dumbest boss and everyone agrees. What happens if you publicly call him/her out? Actions. Have. Consequences. He may be spot on with his comments (I happen to disagree in part), but you can't handle it like this because it foments doubt in the leadership. The team with the cohesive goal is the team that flourishes (see 2014 Buckeyes). Without the team mentality, we have a collection of really talented players, who have yet to put it together.
Want to go down in Buckeye lore in a more positive fashion? Hammer the Wolverines this week, Zeke. Galvanize the team and throw your support behind the coaches. One goal. One mission. BEAT BLUE!

Grading the Bucks: Week 11--Illinois
Offense: B
JT returns with a thoroughly mediocre performance. Some of that is attributable to one of the worst offensive line performances I've seen in while. They actually run-blocked pretty well, but the pass pro was atrocious. Chase Farris was getting embarrassed at RT routinely. I'll give some credit to the Illini D-line, but OSU should be better than that. Zeke was pretty beastly as normal so no complaints there (except with the media ignoring or minimizing his Heisman status). While JT was affected by poor line play, he also showed some issues with some fundamentals and decisions. The JT difference was the 4th and 13 scramble for the first. Even with a bad game for him, the proof is in the pudding, but next week must be better. Trust in Thomas and Co. and good things will happen in the passing game. Suggestion: get Miller more down field routes and bring Curtis Samuel in for some more scat back reception work. Be careful with those sloppy turnovers.
Defense: A
Holding any offense to 3 points in today's game is a fantastic performance, no matter the opponent (albeit a 5-4 team that few--including me--don't give much credit to). The defensive line was absolutely phenomenal. Bosa was routinely double/triple teamed and still got pressure (just ridiculous). Washington and Hubbard also added to hurrying the QB. No real worries in the game when the defense shut down the Illini offense.
Special Teams: Sigh...
I'll give credit to Cameron Johnston who had a nice rebound performance in windy Champaign, but another chippy FG missed? What else is new? We are almost at the point of going for every 4th down on the opponent's side of the field (not kidding). This is freaking Ohio State! How can we not find one guy who can effectively kick a football.
Coaching: B
I sound like a parrot: defensive coaching was great, but... Special teams are still useless and the offensive playcalling is still shaky. Watching the O-line get beat up (especially on the right side) seems to necessitate more running plays (particularly read options), but the game plan never seemed to adapt. Zeke routinely got 8-10 yards a carry, and there wasn't a concerted effort to continue to feed him on early downs. Finally, I'm baffled by the lack of Braxton Miller running routes down field. He's proven the ability to make really nice catches, but most of the time, he's relegated to quick screens. He's no longer a QB, throw him the ball--and stop the stupid wildcat garbage.
Overall: B
Illinois may not be great, but the record says 5-5 which isn't terrible. OSU won comfortably, but we still haven't hit the stride. I think the world is waiting for the Buckeyes to finally reach a glimpse of their potential. This wasn't it, but it wasn't a Bengals style collapse on MNF either. Next week is a test. Time to step up and pass with flying colors.
Officials: Woof
Two horrible reviews that weren't overturned that were CLEAR. JT was clearly in the endzone which cost the Bucks 7 early (no excuses...score on the next play and don't be stupid--like we were) and an obvious Zeke fumble in which the replay official (and on field official) didn't see the ball on the ground with Zeke still upright. I have no clue how these people have jobs.

Grading the Bucks: Week 10--Minnesota
Sorry these are late. I was too busy hiring a guy who single-handedly cost his team their biggest win in 5+ years and then got beat (fairly) handily in his last 2 exhibition games. Mediocrity is the word of the day in Minnesota. Glen Mason looking pretty good right now.
Offense: C+
Well, what did you expect? We know what Cardale is, and we saw it on display again. Now, give credit to the Minnesota D-line because that squad isn't terrible, but the inability to consistently move the ball against a fairly weak secondary isn't getting it done. I will give Cardale credit for improving as the game went on but it simply wasn't enough with the super slow start. Don't give me 'he wasn't prepared because the coaches benched him' garbage. He had a full week of practice and had been the starter for half the season. To look clueless in the first half vs. Minnesota? C'mon man. Part of the improvement in the 2nd half was the coaches remembering what Cardale can/can't do. Finally, QB power runs were called with Cardale and he got a nice 38 yard TD run to seal the game. Zeke had a nice consistent day as normal. The O-line gets the lowest grade of the bunch. JT hides the deficiencies of the O-line but those deficiencies were on full display on Sat. Some of the sacks were on Cardale for holding the ball forever but others were on the line.
Defense: B+
I wish I could give them an A. They played a fantastic game for the most part but 2 MONSTER breakdowns allowed the Gophers to hang around. A swing pass for 40 yards and a deep throw in which the CB/Safety crashed into each other led to both scores. Normally, this wouldn't make a huge deal, but with the offense sputtering early, these breakdowns allowed the game to see closer than it was. Overall, the defense helped make up for the deficiency of the offense (Bell's nice pick 6), but the inability to cover number 1 was super frustrating. Again, I thought the D played really well, but they softened a touch too early. Appearances usually matter so I'd be concerned, but no way an undefeated reigning champ gets left out so just keep winning.
Special Teams: Butt...no wait....BUTT!!
This was just pathetic. Missed FG...check. Kick out of bounds...check. Punting suckage....check. This unit was finally showing some initiative and improving...then had a week like this and it all crashed to the ground. The one bright spot was Jalin Marshall who has been really good returning punts this year (even though he scares me to death). When Cam Johnston looks terrible, you know it's not your day.
Coaching: B
Why did Cardale look like a deer in headlights? He had a full week knowing he was the guy. He was given a second life by JT's idiocy and selfishness and he wasn't ready. Part of this was the coach's game plan. They ditched the read option (thankfully) but they called long developing pass plays which doesn't fit with Cardale's (lack of) defense diagnosis skills leading to sacks and the entire Buckeye Nation screaming to throw the ball as the slow developing blitz attacks in slow motion. They improved by the second half exploiting Cardale's skills with one read plays, Zeke takeover, and QB power. Overall, enough to get out with the win which is all that mattered.
Overall: B-
This was exactly what I expected. Uninspiring offensive performance, solid defensive performance, get out with a win and who cares what it looked like. This was the first of two 'mark-time' games. Next week, JT returns to get back in the groove and prepare for the strong end of the schedule. This was a game to show up, get the win, and get out. Mission accomplished.

Grading the Bucks: Week 8 -- Rutgers
Heeeeeeeeee's Baaaaaaaaaacccckkkk!
Most said 'changing the QB won't fix the flaws of this offense'. Most outside of Let's Go Bucks that is. Captain Smooth returned and their was much rejoicing.
Offense: A
JT comes back and everyone knows their role and thrives. The line seems to be energized with JT under center. I think that's because they trust him to make the right decisions. The receivers know the ball will be there if they're open. I hate to say this, but Cardale doesn't make 50% of the throws JT made against Rutgers. They weren't necessarily tough throws but JT takes what's given (see slant to Thomas for 50 yards). Even the deep ball was in JT's arsenal in addition to near flawless running of the read option. This team is built for JT's game. Zeke was bottled up early because Rutgers decided to make that the focal point (note how they couldn't stop anything else). That being said, Zeke wears teams down and the 4th quarter is Zeke's quarter. The only flaw was a stupid fumble by JT when Michael Thomas couldn't get out of his way (still, that's on JT).
Defense: A
Yeah, they gave up the shutout with the scrubs in, but quality performance. In fact, the performance was near flawless if you take out the first and last drives. The D looked confused on the first drive giving up some chunk plays to a fairly good Rutgers offense, but tightened up and refused to give any quarter after that. Conley made a spectacular interception and the defensive line just completely destroyed the Knights. Bosa & Co. were getting pressure so quickly that they were disrupting handoffs. It was a complete mismatch on the lines which made for a dominant performance. Linebackers also played quite well after the poor tackling early.
Special Teams: A-
Didn't really near Cameron Johnston much although his one punt was one of his worst of the year. No missed PATs, great coverage on kicks, and solid returns each time. Marshall drives me crazy but he looked good returning punts Saturday. Oh yeah, we blocked a punt too.
Coaching: A-
They finally figured it out. Cardale has some talent, but this is JT's offense. Great commitment to the gameplan when it didn't explode out of the gate. Defensively, they shut down the high powered Scarlet Knight offense. The biggest question came on the weird 'trick' play called late in the game. I tweeted out immediately that, had Jalin Marshall thrown the ball, it would have been a penalty. This was noticed by Kirk (or more likely, some stat nerd in the ESPN booth) and mentioned on the broadcast, but that raises 2 questions: 1) Why was a trick play called in that situation against Rutgers? and 2) Did the coaching staff realize that the play as (likely) designed was illegal? It stuns me how many coaches, players, commentators, etc. are not completely familiar with the rules. Maybe he was supposed to fake throwing and then run....but I doubt it. Maybe he was supposed to 'fake the fake'..I don't know where I am (courtesy of Coach Kline).
Overall: A
Lost the shutout, but this was the dominant performance on which we have been waiting. This is the team to smash all who think to oppose them. No mercy for the rest of the year. The Mission to repeat is back. Remove all hope from any opposition. This is our trophy and we ain't giving it up.

Grading the Bucks: Week 7 -- Penn State
The Return of Captain Smooth (let's hope)
Offense: Incomplete
How to grade this unit? Cardale looked horrible and the offense sputtered with him at the helm. To be clear, this was the worst Cardale has looked as a starter. Passes were 'Brett Favre'd' off target, indecisiveness reigned, and there was no rhythm. Enter Captain Smooth, Joe Thomas Barrett IV, who calmly stepped into the breech and took charge. 4/4 passing, of course a very small sample size), was perfect as well as total command of the ground game. All of a sudden, Zeke started to break free, the receivers looked more crisp in routes and blocking, O-line gained confidence, and J.T. was able to run the read option that we love. Once the change happened, I love what I saw from the offense on almost all levels. The misdirection JT excels at was phenomenal, so much so that the Penn State D-line (who is quite good) felt the need to celebrate the one time they broke up a play. Tale of two leaders. Grades will be completed once we see a full JT game...if we see a whole JT game.
Defense: C+
This was the most difficult grade of all time. This game had some absolutely fantastic plays but there were some historic fails. Apple was off as he has been most of the year, tackling was sloppy, and PSU's freshman RB Saquon Barkley tore us up. Yes, he looks like he could be really good, but giving up nearly 200 yards is unacceptable. The D-line was great on the pass rush, even while being held on every play, but the rush defense needs to step it up. The loss of Perry could be costly going forward as Booker looked a little iffy in his absence. We'll see if there are any lingering effects.
Special Teams: A
Cam Johnston was fantastic pinning most punts inside the 5 (!) after great coverage. The one attempted FG was converted and coverage on all kicks/punts was fantastic. There is little (if anything) to complain about from this unit. They were fantastic. The return game wasn't special, but no turnovers are good enough for me. Cam Johnston for Ray Guy? If only we punted more...let's hope not.
Coaching: C
This has to be the final straw, doesn't it?...DOESN'T IT??? I've been shocked at the refusal to see facts by the coaching staff. JT jumpstarting the offense upon arrival is due to more than his abilities. He exudes a quiet confident presence of a leader who's skill set fits the talents of this team to a tee. The misdirection opens up running lanes for both him and Zeke as well as confusing the DBs. For the air game, he doesn't have the cannon Cardale has, but he can diagnose the defense and carve them up efficiently. He takes what is given and gets as much as possible. In game adjustments were ok but the failure to stop the run was an issue. The D-line could stop all but quick passes by forcing the issue, but there didn't seem a concerted effort to stop the run. While the decision eventually paid off, I was baffled by Urban's decision to punt from the opponent 34. Yes, Johnston is good and pinned them deep (although I believe they scored on that drive), but I would prefer to go for it that deep in enemy territory. The extra yards of field position don't seem worth giving up the chance to extend the drive.
Overall: B
Solid victory over a decent team (one of the best we've played) that is improving greatly. Note: they've only lost to currently undefeated teams. Good performance, but I'd like to see a stauncher run D. From a 'point' perspective, the defense was great, but I worry down the road. Offensively, JT ran a great game...but the question is: 'Has he earned the keys to the car?" In my opinion, yes (but you already knew that). Can Urban swallow his pride and make the call? The time is now.
Uniforms: BUTT
Here are my thoughts: If you really think recruits choose their school based on uniforms, I think you're insane. Yes, high school students are not known for their deep wisdom, but if you don't want to come to OSU for the tradition, the excellence, and, oh yeah, the Championships, the fame, the exposure, and the ticket to the next level of the NFL, then I can't help you. This is nothing more than a money grab because fans will pay whatever they ask for new 'swag'. I know the players like them, I know the recruits like them, but there's something to be said for the strength of tradition and the pride of donning the Scarlet and Gray. We don't need gimmicks...we're Ohio State. The tradition of excellence speaks for itself.

Grading the Bucks: Week 6--Maryland
Offense: B
Amazing how the woes of the red zone disappear when Mr. Barrett enters at QB. In all fairness, Cardale did have a nice day, but the indecision is still there. Also, he was majorly bailed out by Braxton on a simple seam route that was significantly overthrown. Zeke was his normal awesome self. I take exception with the O-line play that, in my opinion, is causing some of the issues on offense. They simply aren't getting the explosive burst that I would like off the ball on run plays. Zeke is getting his, but primarily due to his skill, not the blocking up front. Still wondering why we haven't seen more of the Cardale down field throws. The toss to Marshall was setup by great pass protection and we need more explosive plays of that variety.
Defense: D
This was concerning. Running quarterbacks have always caused the Bullet defense to show some chinks in the armor. The D-line has pass rushing ability, but they seem to have trouble plugging up the running lanes. Maryland scored 4 TDs: 2 due to explosive plays that arose from defensive breakdowns, 1 that was methodical, and 1 that was in garbage time. Let downs in the secondary are inexcusable as is the QB run TD. Hiccups happen, but mistakes of the magnitude we saw against the likes of horrible Maryland can't continue. Missed tackles reared their ugly head periodically this game as well.
Special Teams: B-
Great coverage on kicks/punts (huge hit by Fada was beautiful) and Johnston punted very well (55 yard net average). Missed FG and kickoff out of bounds provide a serious downgrade. This needs to stop.
Coaching: C+
Offense cooks under Barrett, but for some reason, the coaches only let him operate in the red zone. If you only trust one QB in the red zone, that's your QB. Cardale was ok in this game, but still far too indecisive to trust as a leader on the field. Let JT orchestrate the red zone offense in a decisive manner from any location on the field. Defensively, the front seven need to work on the rush defense and the linebackers need to attack in a more decisive manner.
Overall: C
21 point victory and it only yields a C? Darn right. There was no excuse for this sorry Maryland team to score 28 points. None. Offensively, there was improvement (wonder why?) but major stepback defensively. There are still more 'warm up' games, but it's time to stop the 'preseason' mentality and bring everything to the table every game. We need to start bullying teams and remind everyone why OSU was/is the juggernaut everyone expected.

Grading the Bucks: Week 5--Indiana
Is this the new normal?
Offense (no Zeke): D- / Zeke: A
This offense just isn't clicking. I'm petrified that we saw this week that the coaches don't trust the starting quarterback to throw a pass. Cardale seems to be unable to go through his progressions and when he sees a receiver open, he fires it 100 mph and misses the receiver. Zeke has been fantastic even when the entire defense knows he's coming (couldn't get going because IU had 10 people in the box every play). Receiver play was eh as was the O-line. O-line opened some holes for Zeke and protected fairly well. Also, it needs to be said. Jalin Marshall is a liability. He has some flash and dash, but the crushing turnovers and overall stupid play is taking it's toll. To his credit, he blocked very well, but the turnovers... Say what you will, but I believe QB and WR are the issues. Cardale's final stats weren't terrible, but based on what I saw, he wasn't up to acceptable standards. I know I'm completely blinded by JT's greatness...but he needs to be there. I want a leader than can play the mental game. Cardale is not playing the mental game.
Defense: C-
Penalties are killing us. This defense has been solid all year but they disappointed me this week. Look no further than the long run by Diamont. Tyvis Powell absolutely layed an egg by taking the worst angle a safety has ever taken. Apple continues to get picked on (even though he sealed the win on the final play). Bell had a so-so game (not like his solid games of the recent past). The front seven was actually pretty good, but the big plays can't happen. Glad to see Perry and McMillan stop the leading rusher in the conference. Early in the game, there was a huge miscommunication that can't happen on a long pass to a receiver. Too sloppy for me.
Special Teams: B+
Nothing special. Some nice punts and punt coverage. Dropping the ball into the endzone on the punt was a huge swing that can't happen. Overall...another mediocre performance (which I'm fine with). They didn't cost us anything which is a win in my Special Teams book.
Coaching: D
Play calling is still an absolute joke. Know your personnel when formulating a gameplan. I'm not a 'give it to Zeke on every play' guy, but I support more north south running with Zeke and more short quick hitter passes (which don't seem to be in the playbook). I'm also a fan (especially against the 126th ranked pass defense in the nation) of a few chuck it up and let your receiver go get it...you know the entire offense during the playoff for Cardale. Yes, Devin Smith is gone, but even an arm punt isn't terrible at times when there's the chance of a homerun. I don't think we threw a single deep bomb all game. THAT'S WHAT CARDALE'S STRENGTH IS!!
Overall: D+
Maybe Indiana is secret good. Maybe not. Doesn't matter to me. This Buckeye team can't roll it out there like that and hope to win every game. You're either getting better or getting worse...and I don't see us getting better. Next week is definitely good for what ails you in Maryland. They are butt, and we must expose them for what they are (hehe). JT, I love you. Come back to us...

Grading the Bucks: Week 4--Western Michigan
Eh.....what a thoroughly mediocre game. Need to get better.
Offense: B-
I'm sorry. I still expect more from this team. There is simply too much talent to only score 31 on offense vs. the likes of Western Michigan. Cardale had a nice day, but it should have been a very special day if those bombs were thrown correctly or if he managed the goalline situations correctly (that intentional grounding was a joke...). He missed on 2-3 other deep passes that were open. This is supposed to be his strength (and was in the playoffs). We the burners we have on the outside, that a pass that must be completed. Better game from the O-Line but Zeke needs more north-south plays called for him. He looked good, but I want more runs up the gut and out-muscling folk. Step in the right direction, but the talent dictates we should be farther along. On a sad note, JT didn't look very good, but I'm guessing Urban has completely thrown everything behind Cardale. Not my choice, but since Jones is getting the reps, rust is expected from JT.
Defense: C+
Again, not good enough. The defensive line got great pressure on passing plays but were bullied on rushing plays--unacceptable at OSU vs. MAC. The linebackers were simply terrible in run defense. McMillan had a ton of tackles but this was mostly a product of being completely out of position and catching the running back after it had passed him. The inside linebackers were not up to snuff. Washington has had a great season and was rewarded with a great play and fat-guy TD (3rd straight week with a defensive TD). Secondary was pretty good except for Eli Apple who looked terrible. It was only one game, but he was certainly picked on. Also, the Damon Webb suspension hurt the other side of the field. Gareon Conley wasn't visible because WMU must have seen tape and decided it wasn't worth testing him. Overall, 'eh' performance. Too many gashes on the running plays for my liking.
Special Teams: A-
What? We didn't suck? No kickoffs out of bounds for the second straight week, a blocked punt (called back), blocked FG, and a punt downed at the 1....nice resume for the week. Only downgrade is no scores, but I'm great with these results on special teams.
Coaching: B
In game coaching was fine, but I'd still like to see more Zeke up the gut at times. Thankfully, they started calling deep passes to exploit Cardale's strength. Defensively, the team didn't look angry enough and they looked confused as to why they were getting beat on rushing plays. The physical talent advantage is enormous, so the difference is either preparation (coaching) or motivation (coaching). I need to see a higher level of focus from the players. This game should have been an absolute laugher at halftime (40 point lead)...it would have been last year. Need to rediscover the hunger.
Overall: B-
Thoroughly mediocre. Keep improving. Another undefeated foe with a chip on the shoulder this week. IU is going to throw everything on the table. Be ready Bucks. This weeks level might not be enough next week.

Grading the Bucks: Week 3--Northern Illinois
Welcome back JT.
Offense: D
I was wrong like everyone else. This offense should be an absolute juggernaut (and may yet be), but they aren't there yet. I've seen the bevy of arm chair QBing and I disagree with most of it so allow me to throw my two cents in. Playcalling is an issue, but it's not the reason for the lack of success. The reason is simply a lack of execution. No, Tom Herman in Houston isn't causing Cardale to throw to the defense or the O-line to struggle in the blocking schemes. The coaching staff isn't different. I wonder if we're seeing a team that's resting on it's laurels. You can't roll the ball out there and expect to win when you get every team's best shot. NIU isn't a slouch, but they are not only a defensive TD worse. The offense is simply too predictable.
To the quarterback issue: It's time to go back to Captain Smooth. JT needs to take the first team reps for the whole week and to get back to 2014 JT. Cardale has simply regressed from the magical title run and the loss of a consistent deep threat is simply more costly than we thought. Why I think it's JT time? The receivers are more possession/slot receivers than stretch the field...which works with the defensive diagnosis ability of JT. Cardale can muscle the ball...but the receivers aren't built to run under it. Michael Thomas remains an absolute stud that isn't being utilized. JT can exploit his skill set. Also, we thought Cardale would open the running lanes up for Zeke by stretching the field, but unfortunately, the lack of a true running threat with Cardale has keyed the front seven into stopping 15. JT confuses the defense and keeps them questioning who has the ball. It's time for a return to greatness.
Finally, 5...FIVE turnovers? Completely unacceptable. Cardale's throws were atrocious, Zeke's fumble was bad (but not as costly as it was on 4th down), JT's interception was a lapse in judgement that was on him for missing the deep zone, and Samuel's was inexcusable given the situation. This. Can. Not. Continue. Mr. Hoying likes to say: "Stupid team rarely wins". We bucked that trend this week, but not against better teams.
Defense: A-
Very little to complain about here. All the points came off turnovers with a shorter field. The defense was fantastic, but I can't give a full A to the team because of one play. 3rd and 11 late in the game in the red zone with a 10 point lead, NIU ran a draw play up the middle...and carried multiple attempted tacklers beyond the sticks. That play made me want to puke. The fact that NIU simply wanted it more, it not acceptable for the Bullets. That being said, the 3 stars on this defense: Darron Lee, Gareon Conley (keep an eye on this guy), and Joey Bosa. Look out NFL.
Special Teams: B+
The other team kicked the ball out of bounds!! Not us!! HOORAY!!! Not much to complain about. Good punting (although there was simply too many of them...thanks offense), good kicking, but one issue: Jalin Marshall needs to stop stopping my heart every time he field a punt. Crunch time when simply getting possession can seal the game, and you DIVE TO CATCH A PUNT!?!?! I'm done returning punts. Time to let the ball bounce every time and stay away.
Coaching: B-
Defensive coaching was fantastic again. Offensively... eh. I won't blame the closeness of the game on the playcalling (see above). I still don't know why we eschew the quick slant, screen, buttonhooks, and drag routes, but hopefully, we can realize that these receivers are built for this. I have faith that it will correct. I am totally of the belief that the coaches were not a fault this week.
Overall: C
Nice and average. Great defense; painful offense. Time to turn the corner. Maybe NIU is really, really good...or maybe not. Next week better show me something. I really thought (like everyone) we'd have great eyepopping offense and a good defense. Instead we have great eyepopping defense and an ok offense. The good news is offense is easier to fix (we've seen these same players go crazy). I just want to see it NOW!

Grading the Bucks: Week 2--Hawai'i
Still...not. good. enough.
Offense: C-
This offense has the skill player to absolutely annihilate the competition...and I didn't see enough yesterday. Cardale made some horrible decisions (hidden by the fact that Hawai'i is bad), Zeke couldn't get going, and the team was just blah. Curtis Samuel had a fantastic game but that was the only bright spot offensively. The playcalling was questionable once again. More to come later on that. JT brought came in and ran the standard offense quite well. Many are judging the poor two-minute drill as a monster negative. I don't because that's not his skill set. Running the zone read was great again. I know I'm picky about Cardale's game, but I think an objective viewer would have just as much to be desired. Braxton ran well again, but it's becoming predictable (more later).
Defense: A
Nothing bad to say here (except for the dropped interceptions). There's really nothing to nitpick when the goose-egg is on the scoreboard for the opponent. The pass coverage was excellent (first time Hawai'i held under 100 passing yards since 1998). A couple hiccups with stupid, but overall consistent sure tackling. Darron Lee was fantastic (on defense) as were the rest of the linebackers. D-line looked pretty good with Bosa's return. Bosa demolished his man but got double teamed a lot. Expect that to continue so time for the backside DE to push the envelope.
Special Teams: Hot garbage
Death, taxes, and Urban Meyer special teams kicking off out of bounds--the few sureties in life. Darron Lee was great on defense but the roughing the punter in the endzone...c'mon man. I'm at the point where I want a touchback every time on kickoffs (I've always said that), play base defense vs. punts and let all punts bounce. This is a major issue...but we won the title last year so...eh?
Coaching: B-
Defensive coaching was fine. Again, the offensive playcalling raised eyebrows. Why is Zeke running laterally? Will Braxton ever hand off on the read option? Why is JT lined up outside when Braxton takes the snap? These are serious questions that the dumb fan in me has raised...and if I see it, I would expect the opposing team sees these trends. Every time Zeke went between the tackles, he got about 4+ yards. Stretch plays or read sweeps yielded -1 to 2 yards. I just don't understand why the playcalling doesn't match the strength of the players.
Overall: B-
38-0 shutout and I'm giving a slightly above average grade. Why? Because this game was closer than it should have been. OSU should have limped to 50+ points. The defense was great but I was not pleased with the offense. There is still work to do. I think the coaching staff needs to gameplan with the players skills in mind. When everything gels, look out.

Grading the Bucks-- Week 1: Virginia Tech
Decent performance in week 1, but I'm going to be honest, I will be a very tough grader this year. This team isn't vying for a conference championship...they're trying to be an all-time great. If you want to be the best, criticism is needed.
Let me be clear, I think Urban made the incorrect decision concerning the starting QB, but that is NOT the purpose of this weekly post. I will grade based on the on-field performance (sans coaching).
Offense: B+
Coming out like gangbusters with the tough grading. Cardale was...good, but I expected more from an accuracy standpoint. The interception wasn't an issue (fantastic play by VT), but some of the decisions baffled me (the decision to throw late over the middle on the pick was bad). 12 Gauge continues to show the absolute jaw-dropping strength to casually flip the ball 40 yards while jumping backwards. Forgetting about accuracy, that arm strength is astounding. The passing game was fine but Cardale let a few passes go that he never should have attempted (and one was a TD). When you have a backup H-back making a diving catch while being interfered with, there just aren't words... Jones running was OK, but the option is not his game. The QB power is his strength so use it! Cardale will be fine, but his decision making still needs work.
Zeke was in midseason form from the first run, but Urban clearly didn't see the need to wear him out. More carries for the bell-cow would be nice, but the Oline needs some work. VT has a really good Dline and it showed here. Hard to knock the Oline that gave up 0 sacks and produced 300+ rushing yards, but Cardale's raw physicality kept the sack number round and the ball carriers were simply the top of the game. Price and Boren need to pick up their play to be an all-timer team.
JT comes in and immediately runs for 40 and throws a gorgeous touch pass for 26 for a TD to the next big star Mike Thomas. I loved the way the offense flowed effortlessly under JT. It was the style and panache to Cardale's muscle.
Finally, the biggest story was the forgotten Braxton Miller. What a fantastic resurgence! There aren't words for how amazing he must feel for reminding Buckeye Nation what he brings to the table. I think he's found a home position that will earn him a nice chunk at the next level and push the Bucks to another title. I thought he'd be ok as a WR, but I never expected the hands to supplement the raw athleticism.
Defense: C+
Secondary looked pretty darn good (other than Apple getting juked by a fullback...C'mon Man!). The concern is in the front seven. Bosa will certainly shore up the pass rush, but the interior line wasn't as dominant as I'd like. More concerning was the inconsistent play of the LBs. Lee, Perry, and McMillan made some nice plays, but were out of position on just as many plays. Hopefully, it was first game jitters, but that unit has a history to live up to. The biggest positive was the young guns. Hubbard, while not Bosa, filled in quite well and Conley was fantastic (other than a baaaad DPI). The downgrade is because I have no belief that VT is good on offense. Brewer was moving the ball comfortably when VT got the momentum. That shouldn't happen. It wasn't easy, but it wasn't hard. Final Note: The throwback TD was defended pretty well (options 1-4 were covered). When it comes to goalline defense, you need to sell out on a few options and hope for the best. The only realistic way to stop the throwback is to get to the QB (which we didn't).
Special Teams: Butt
Oh boy, here we go again. Let's see: kickoff out of bounds (check), hold on a punt that wasn't fielded (check), muffed punt (check), missed FG (check). Come on guys. There is simply no excuse here. I know Zeke isn't normally a punt returner...so don't make him return punts. Honestly, while Jalin Marshall provides home run potential, I'm not more confident that he won't fumble. Get. Better.
Coaching: C
The playcalling was very questionable. While Cardale was the starter, it sure seemed like the playcalling was optimized for JT's game. JT runs the option (read and/or speed) better than pretty much anyone in the game, but speed option isn't in Cardale's repertoire. The lack of the slant game still baffles me, and honestly, VT was giving Cardale single coverages all day. Why didn't we take more shots downfield? I don't understand the gameplan. Props to the coaches for preparing Braxton and making us completely forget about the suspensions.
Overall: B-
Good start, but I want more. If Brewer didn't go down, would the game have been different? I don't think so, but the question bears consideration. The defense needs to turn up to the level at which they finished the title run. The offense is going to be next level and we just scatched the surface. Let's not forget: the best player in college football (arguably), the number 1 punt returner, and 2 key receivers/Hbacks have yet to play...and we dominated a decent team in a tough environment. Check that, the score says dominated, but I don't give them that description...yet. We saw the flashes of all-time greatness. This entire season is about the chase for history. It has begun.

Grading the Bucks--CFP Championship: Oregon
Offense: B+
What a run (and we saw a lot of that in the championship game). Ezekiel Elliot proved he was a grown a$$ man and took care of the completely overmatched Oregon defense. While I think Zeke was the absolute key, it's hard to say he was the only key. The O-line was fantastic, Cardale was a bulldozer and made a few key throws (great pass to Marshall over the middle), the WR did their job (nice hockey stop Thomas)...it was a complete domination of the offense....but.... I said before the game, turnovers will be key. Luckily, they weren't because the Bucks couldn't hang on the ball. That's really the only negative. Beastly performance in which the buzzword of 'physicality' is actually apropos.
Defense: A-
With all those turnovers, the defense stepped up in a BIG way. There was some nervousness after the first drive that seemed exceedingly easy for the Heisman winner. After that, they did NOTHING. The biggest detractor to the defense was the Buckeye offense who continually challenged the defense with giving the ball back. They stepped up each and every time. The biggest moment was after the invisible defender caused the Cardale fumble in the redzone. Backed up with a four point lead, the Bucks became Bullets. Eli Apple made (arguably) the play of the game to push the TE out of the endzone on 3rd and goal. If Oregon takes the lead, momentum is huge, but this defense answered the Bell (see what I did there) time and time again. Big 4th and goal stop, holding the Ducks to an atrocious 3rd down percentage by forcing them into 3rd and long; what a transition we've seen on this side of the ball since September.
Special Teams: B+
Eh....didn't really need these guys. They did their job. I love that we kicked it into the endzone on kick offs most of the time. Can't really say much with the limited amount of kicks, but overall solid.
Coaching: A
Masterful. This team was fired up and wasn't to be denied. The decision to go for it on 4th and short on our side of the field was great. I love the call in that situation. Urban had his finger on the pulse of his team and went for the gold. After the first drive or two, the gameplan was simplified to what worked...give it to Zeke. They can't stop it. I would have preferred the Buckeyes have gone for it on 4th late in the game, but the coaches pretty much knew the game was over at that point. Let's be clear: the decision to go in the 3rd was the right decision regardless of the outcome. I applaud the coaches for making the 'tough' decision. You play to win the game.
Also, some are knocking Urban for scoring another TD at the end...come on. This is Oregon, not the Little Sisters of the Poor. Stop us or shut up. If he ran a double pass, that's one thing. Simple dive plays, that's football.
Overall: A+
National Champions. Feels good. Win this and it's an auto A+. Fantastic year Bucks. What a ride! Let's do it again next year!

Grading the Bucks--The Sugar Bowl: Bama
I'll be honest with you, I should have done this earlier. I don't remember all the finer points of the game a week later but I'll give it a whirl.
Offense: A-
Can't say enough about Zeke and the O-line. Immediately postgame, Mr. Hoying and I talked about how we may have actually seen an upgrade at the running back position after losing Carlos--and this is nothing knocking El Guapo's ability. Zeke has been able to find, hit, and explode through holes while simply blowing by people. The fumble was no good but 2 huge runs set the tone and ended the game. The O-line has also matured in ways I never thought possible. And speaking of maturation...Car-Dale Jones. For a guy who looks like he's waiting for his mom to pick him up at the playground, he is playing like a man. Still not the polished passer that JT was, but he can sling it and bowl people over. The downgrade is for the 2 turnovers. Can't do that against the Ducks. Need to score with them.
I want to make one additional comment here: the double reverse pass for the TD before the half isn't getting nearly enough pub. I saw it rated as the 8th or so best play of the bowl season---um, no. This play was UNBELIEVABLE. Let's break it down. Evan Spencer, a WR, throws an absolutely perfect pass to the corner of the endzone over the outstretched fingertips of an Alabama DB. Pretty good...but that's not even the best part. The catch by Michael Thomas is an all-timer. He catches it with the fingertips and still manages to contort his foot to stay inbounds! Uncle Keyshawn couldn't have done it better. Odell Beckham Jr.'s catch was better, but that's about the only one this year (2014-now) that can top it. The body control was phenomenal.
Defense: A-
Read my posts from earlier this year, I was hyping up a Mr. Darron Lee as the next great OSU LB. Nailed it. The defense gave up some runs that could have broken the spirit but they kept coming. Steve Miller with the pick 6 (he's a picker, he's a grinner, he's a lover, he's a sinner) to seize momentum and the overall frustration of Blake Sims. Michael Bennett has been the unsung player the last 2 games for this defense. He's been eating up space on the interior line frustrating a downhill rushing attack. Amari Cooper struck efficiently, but couldn't get free to open the game for Bama. Credit the young secondary for holding up. And a final thought: Go down Tyvis. I know that may not be 'what Prime would do', but let's be serious. All he does is make game ending interceptions. The differences was holding Bama to 2-13 on 3rd down. Best defense gets off the field.
Special Teams: A-
No returns but another great kicking performance. It's not often that Cameron Johnston is upstaged by the opponent, but JK Scott was fantastic for Bama. Nuremburger made his 2 chip shots and Johnston was solid as usual. I believe it was Spencer who made a fantastic recovery of an onside kick at the end in what should have sealed it. The return game was fine but nothing special (although I seem to remember a big hit on Bama on a kickoff return...might be remembering wrong). After a week, if I don't remember the special teams, it was usually a good week.
Coaching: B
The playcalling was still avoiding the run a bit too much when Zeke was getting it done early. 10 yards a pop but Herman really wanted to get Cardale going (especially near the goalline). Sometimes, you need to ride your stud (give it to Hyde--still having PTSD from the B1G Championship vs. MSU). Defense was called very well and the halftime adjustments were strong. Then the final OSU drive came... Zeke was still chugging and a first down ends the game. Something tells me that with the emotion and momentum of the game, Zeke gets 10 yards on 3 carries even if we tell Bama the plan. But... Meyer/Herman/whatever (Bollman?) decides to 'go for the ballgame on a bomb on 1st down... I get the idea of shaking it up and being aggressive, but there's aggressive and just plain dumb. Sure the defense is stacked for the run, but that play has way too many bad outcomes. Cardale could have simply misthrown the deep ball even if Devin was wide open. 3 straight knees gives Bama the ball back at the 20 (at worst--just tell Cam to punt it through the uprights) with about 40 seconds. No way they get that shot they had at a Hail Mary. Now, I'm not advocating the kneel down, but I run Zeke on the safest play and tell him his first 10 priorities are not fumbling and the 11th is to get yards. Odds are pretty good that Bama doesn't even get the ball back. As it stands, the Bucks triumphed over this obstacle, but in my mind, it was an obstacle that was self imposed.
Overall: A-
Week 2. A devastating loss at home to a mediocre team. We at Let's Go Bucks said: 'Win, and it will work out.' Now, the Bucks head to Jerry World for all the Dr. Peppers. Let's make it count. I expect a shootout but whatever happens, this has been a fun ride...and, one final thought, this Buckeye team is going to get better next year...Have fun 'OTHER CONFERENCES'.
GO BUCKS! BEAT THE DUCKS!!

Grading the Bucks: B1G Championship--Wisconsin
Offense: A+
What a game. Cardale was absolutely fantastic based on the situation in which he was thrust. Without regard to the situation, I'd grade him at a B+ (some of the deep balls were thrown into coverage), but he gave his receivers a chance. This was by far the best the receivers have played all year. Thomas, Smith, Smith, Spencer, and Marshall all ran crisp routes and won seemingly every 50-50 battle. Oh yeah, there was also the ground game...200+ for Zeke. I'd say that's pretty good. The O-Line was outstanding opening holes and protecting the last remaining QB. There is almost nothing not to like here. If they keep up this level, watch out Bama (and we're going to be pretty good next year too).
Defense: A+
The best I've seen this defense look in 3 years...easily. The D-line play above and beyond the already lofty expectations. Bennett, Bosa, Frazier, Miller, and Washington were all electric. They took a major Heisman campaign and completely crushed it. The pass D was no slouch either (although their task was miniscule). The Vonn Bell interception was textbook. I could see from the stands the way he baited the QB and broke on the ball the second it was thrown. There was one bad play in pass coverage (about 3 plays from the end) in which a receiver was completely wide open...but those were the backups and Wisconsin sucks. It all comes back to the line and linebackers. I was very nervous going up against Gordon, and this team answered and destroyed the bell. Fantastic job.
Special Teams: A-
I'm sorry Cameron Johnston. You are amazing and borderline MVP. 72 yard punt that checked up at the 1? Another bomb hit with a 9 iron that kicked back inside the 5? Are you kidding? I just had to do something here because this is the only unit with any real blemish (and there were 2). The blocked field goal wasn't fun (although it didn't matter) and, you know where I'm going, ANOTHER KICKOFF OUT OF BOUNDS!! It was almost a point of pride to return to form on the last kickoff of the night. I'm sorry, but it grinds my gears. Cameron Johnston gets an A+++.
Coaching: A
Fantastic gameplan. Keep Cardale clean and let him do what he does best: throw the deep ball. The gameplan was essentially ride Zeke and bomb it. Perfect. Defensively, they clearly watched film and realized Wisconsin sucks. Stop Gordon and watch the Badger QB's suck. Bingo. I also love the mentality to jump on them early and show no mercy. The energy was there from the opening kickoff and that is testament to coaching. Never forget last year. Eyes on the prize.
Overall: A
This was about as flawless a game as possible. The crispness of execution was there and the hunger was definitely apparent. Cardale was bailed out by excellent receiver play at times, but he gave his guy a chance. The people in my section kept agonizing that more points were needed to impress. The two most important numbers from this game were both 0: 0 points given up; 0 turnovers. There was no doubt in mind after the game (actually, no doubt since VT) that we were in. I said the week before (and no one listened): win and jump TCU. This team has a tough draw, but to be the best, you have to beat the best (as the Badgers found out). Play like this and there's a real chance.

Grading the Bucks: Week 14: TTUN
Short writeup as finals are breathing down my neck. In short, very nervous to have lost JT.
Offense: B
This will be a repeated mantra throughout this post: Michigan is terrible. With the way this offense has been chugging, this should have been a massacre. Yes, the UM defense is 'statistically' pretty good, but teams didn't have to score on offense to win. I am very concerned with the lack of carries by Elliot (which should change this week). He's a beast and needs to be fed. JT is still my boy, but the play calling was really weird. The deep bombs where absolutely perfect so credit to JT (Braxton can't make those downfield tosses). With that said, there was far too many punts for my liking. I think Wisconsin's defense is comparable, but we need more dynamic play. Dynamic doesn't necessarily mean flashy...maybe a SLANT or SCREEN.
Defense: C
See above: Michigan sucks. That first toss by Gardner was the worst throw I've ever seen...and yet, he was able to move the ball fairly consistently which is unacceptable. The wolverines haven't run the ball with success...until facing this team. Funchess returned to form but I wonder if that was due to Doran Grant having what I consider a terrible game. Our run defense has been shaky all year (not happy about Melvin next week), but the pass defense has been pretty good...until this week. There is no excuse for letting the Wolverines score multiple TDs with as anemic as there offense has been. Yeah, they scored a defensive TD to seal it, but the stupid plays (looking at you Bosa) outweigh the good. Need to tighten it up...not worthy of the title Bullets this week. 4 drives of 75+ yards....unacceptable.
Special Teams: B
Nothing special here. One good thing: no kicks out of bounds...YAY!! But...Jalin, CATCH THE BALL!! Yes, he picked it up and ran well, but stop putting the ball on the ground! Good punting and decent return game. That's all I have to say about that.
Coaching: C-
Yes, the 4th down call worked, and I'll give credit for a great play design, but I still don't understand the refusal to sneak the ball on 4th and inches with a MONSTER at QB. Cardale ain't come to play school, but he came to push people around. Let him do it. Also, Zeke's helmet came off an he exited the field on a 3rd and 1...so the coaches made the obvious play call and ran the scat back up the middle into a pile...stuff...punt. Huh? What's with the call? Samuel isn't a bruiser. If you need him in there, don't run a play that runs counter to his skill set. Offensively and defensively, this was an oddly coached game. They'll need to earn their pay as we're on to option 3 at QB facing a beast at RB (but we've faced some other good backs too).
One side note: I've heard people blaming the coaches for JT's injury...that's stupid. JT made a bad read and got hit. It was a fluke injury and in no way the fault of the coaches 'putting him into harm's way'. Violent game leads to unfortunate injuries from time to time.
Overall: B-
No JT can potentially be devastating to this team. I am very nervous for Cardale, but let's hope the things the coaches say are better than coachspeak. Wisconsin is a much better offense than Michigan so game on.

Grading the Bucks--Week 13: Indiana
Offense: B
J.T. had another 'eh' game. He missed too many open receivers that can't happen against a better team. I love him, but he hasn't been as ridiculously good as he was early in the season. He's still a stud, but he needs to become more consistent. The first pick was horrible. The second wasn't his fault (yes, a little high, but the ball should have been caught). The big issue is turnovers. Was the Michael Thomas play a fumble? I'm not sure. But I do know we should have scored at will on the Hoosiers. See the first drive as an example. The O-line wasn't up to par as they should have DOMINATED the IU line. Zeke was pretty non-existent after the first big run. Oh yeah, that Heuerman guy is pretty darn good.
Defense: B
Stop. Missing. Tackles. This is an epidemic that must be stopped. Overall, the Buckeyes bottled up Coleman for most of the game (ignoring those two HUGE runs). The long run by the (non-mobile) QB on 3rd and 11 was inexcusable. Stop there and the game is a blowout from the start. The D-line sleepwalked through the game. Secondary was pretty good, but this run D must improve before Melvin Gordon (or David Cobb again). This team's defensive woes come down to one thing...big plays. If we can limit those, this team can do some great things.
Special Teams: Yoyo but C+
Jalin Marshall returning a punt for a TD => Good. Jalin Marshall nonchalantly hopping over a bouncing punt on the way to the sideline => Bad. Marshall calling for a fair catch, picking up the bouncing ball on the 5 => BAD. KICKOFF OUT OF BOUNDS AGAIN => BAAAADDDD. I get the strategy about pinning the opposing team inside the 25 on kickoffs, but the kicker can't keep it in bounds. The risk isn't worth it. The bright spot was another fantastic day by Cameron Johnston. The punt that checked up at the 2 was beautiful. And bad to bad...another missed FG. GET BETTER!
Coaching: C+
JT was struggling but there seemed to be no commitment to running the ball. I still don't get this coaching staff. Also, IU apparently was the first team to watch OSU film and realized that Herman ALWAYS calls a QB Power run from an empty set on 3rd and 1. Predictability isn't a good thing for the coach (granted, OSU should be able to tell IU what the play is and still have it work). Defensively, there is a bit too much overpursuit. Aggressiveness is not always a good thing.
Overall: B-
It was a 15 point game overall a bad-OK IU team. The Hoosiers this year are better than in the past, but Coleman is a special player (that Gordon has overshadowed). That being said, the Bucks didn't play their best and got it done. Also, everyone points out that the score wasn't indicative of the game saying it was a lot closer...don't forget, Coleman broke another long TD in garbage time. Yes, it was close in the 3rd, but the score may have actually been CLOSER than it was.
Now, nothing elsematters....GO BUCKS! BEAT BLUE!

Grading the Bucks--Week 12: Minnesota
Offense: B+
JT was phenomenal as always. The interception was not good obviously, but his running was great. There were some great passes and some that leave much to be desired (likely due to cold weather--not a good excuse). Zeke was very good as well, but he still isn't getting enough carries. Receivers definitely had an off day overall (dropsies for Thomas) but still better from last year. Here's the big downside that I can't get out of my head...the fumble at the goalline is COMPLETELY INEXCUSABLE! The game is over....no doubt, if Marshall holds the ball (or Spencer recovers it). The players need to know the situation and know that there's no need to press there.
Defense: B-
I really see some improvement on defense from the last few year; great improvement; except in one area that is an Ohio State staple...TACKLING. This team's tackling ability went into the crapper and I don't know why. It's nice having a secondary that doesn't blow chunks (see Buckeyes 2013), but there are still guys going for 'blow up' hits rather than form tackling. The line is fantastic...at rushing the passer, but there is much to improve on stopping the run. A Jonathan Hankins would be great to shore up the middle. Bosa and Bennett are producing in one aspect (sacks) but not the other (tackling the RB consistently)..
Special Teams: BUTT
This is just pathetic. Every week, they shock me by doing something else stupid. Every week, a kickoff goes out of bounds...EVERY WEEK. Every week, someone tries to be a hero and returns a kickoff to the 15. Every week (it seems), someone muffs a punts or fumbles a kickoff (inside the 10...REALLY!?!?!). That throwback return by Minnesota almost went the distance because we're way too aggressive. It's time to kick every kickoff deep, kneel every kickoff, not catch any punt (don't even send someone back), and get better punting (Johnston looked a bit off in the cold). Butt...that's all I have to say about that.
Coaching: B-
Urban coaching the special teams...that's a problem. Overall, the game was called ok, but I don't understand this team's predilection to check out early. That's coaching. Why is Marshall stretching for the goalline? Why is Marshall catching (or failing to catch) a punt inside the 6? Why is Herman throwing deep early when it isn't needed and the short game was churning? Why weren't the Bucks running the clock a little more and keeping Barrett out of harm's way? Where has fundamental tackling go? These are questions for which I'd love to have answers. This was an odd game that had some enormous mistakes that made a laugher into a 'close game' (I was never worried about losing).
Overall: B
This team is better than a 7 point win at Minnesota. The Gophers are improved, but OSU is so much better, there is no reason for this to be anything but a 21 point game. Don't listen to the talking heads, all OSU needs to do is win (the chips will fall as they may). Blowouts don't really make any difference, but I'd like some more momentum and energy going forward. The next two weeks should be massacres. They need to shore up the tackling before Mr. Gordon meets the Bucks.

Grading the Bucks -- Week 11: Michigan State
See my prediction of the game. Last week went exactly according to plan. Early mistakes followed by a fantastic response.
Offense: A
There we go. Exactly what the Dr. ordered for this young team - a chance to open up and do what they do best. JT was phenomenal and did things that I haven't seen a QB do since Troy Smith 2006. This isn't to say that JT is the next Heisman winner, but man he looked great against the 'supposed' immovable Spartan D. His passes were crisp and on the money and his decisions were on the money. His moves were great when he chose to run even when we MSU had to know it was coming. Let's not forget the other aspects of the offense. The WR were making plays (Smith had his best game and Thomas is going to be star). The O-line has really come into their own and is in for some great things in the future. Oh yeah, let's know forget Zeke who was fantastic. See what happens when we give Hyde...er, uh, Elliot, the ball? Good stuff. This offense is definitely one that no one wants to face especially with an Oline that can protect and run block effectively against a good defense.
Defense: B
The point total wasn't pretty, but the execution was pretty good. The downgrade isn't for the number of points given up, but for the missed tackles that sprinkled throughout this game. Conley getting run over was simply embarrassing. Langford gave the Bucks fits so there's still work to be done. The linebackers continue to improve in pass coverage (but the MSU O-line controlled the line of scrimmage and the run game). Overall, I was pleased with the secondary play sans a few plays near the end of the game, but they did what they needed to. I heard a lot of questions about the disappearance of Bosa, but this is a team sport. While the commentators questioned where Bosa was, the rest of the line was making a statement...why? Because Bosa was attracting all the attention. Clean up the (bad) missed tackles and these will be some Bullets.
Special Teams: C
Woof. For all the emphasis Urban puts on special teams, they plain suck. 47 yard FG ends up short (not that big of a deal), but the turnovers on the punts and the fumbles on the kickoff (paging Dontre) are simply unacceptable. Yes, I saw that Dontre had a broken foot...maybe he shouldn't have been out there if he was hurt...and yes, the coach should know about it and/or the player should have taken himself out. Oh yeah, Cameron Johnston was good for his two punts.
Coaching: A
This was by far the best coached game I've seen by Tom Herman in his time at OSU. The run/pass mix was perfect and he finally played to the strengths of JT--he can pass where Braxton couldn't. Defensively, the calls were good but the execution needs to improve tackling, but offensively, this was about the most perfectly called game ever. Look at the drive summary for OSU: Missed FG, Punt, TD, TD, TD, TD, TD, TD, TD, Punt. More of this please!
Overall: A-
More please. The VT game is a distant memory. Time to focus on what the Bucks can control. Keep winning and let the dominoes fall where they may. Let's enjoy this win and focus on the Gophers.
Offense: A
There we go.

Grading the Bucks: Week 10 - Illinois
Another game...another yaaaawwwwnnn.
Offense: B
Let's be clear: Illinois sucks. While the Bucks indeed put up a ton of points, the offense wasn't as crisp as I would like (especially early). I know I'm super tough here, but the Illini are so terrible, there is a high bar set. JT threw some nice balls, but missed some easy ones as well. No room for error next week. Also, the complacency late was disappointing. You only play football in college for 4 years, so might as well make it count. Blowout game? Doesn't matter to me. Too much screwing around that just doesn't work against good teams. One other thing, for all the 4th downs we're going for, we aren't converting. I never thought I'd miss the Dave play or Tresselball. I'm ok with the aggressive playcalling, but not the dumb playcalling. If you want to go on 4th and 1, man up and hit em in the mouth. O-line play was good but the competition ramps up a ton next week. Also, Cardale had the best tackle/hit of the week, so there's that.
Defense: A-
Still like the progression I'm seeing in this unit. The linebackers are getting better every week (albeit against garbage). McMilllan, Lee, and even Grant and Perry are playing some good football. Joey Bosa is still a man possessed but I'd like a little more pressure from the other big men. Bosa is attracting a lot of attention so the others (Washington, Miller, and Bennett) need to make a bigger splash on the stat sheet. I still need more fire out of this unit when the game's in hand. The game is over, but the team didn't show much desire to preserve the shutout. I want my defense to be bloodthirsty and angry when they give up points, no matter the score. I want Chris Spielman to infuse these kids with killer instinct and desire to achieve perfection.
Special Teams: B
Nuremberger was fairly solid, but Urban shows that he doesn't really trust him...or just refuses to give him chances. My memory just isn't good enough to remember the intricacies of special teams (no a 13 second block doesn't intrigue me). Cameron Johnston is still good. This unit has to be flawless next week. That opening kickoff though....woof. Bury it deep.
Coaching: C
Tressel is turning in his grave (if he was dead). Going for it every 4th down with dumb play calls?!? It's ok to punt. It's ok to kick field goals. Hopefully this was just to give more for MSU to look at (although it didn't seem to phase them last year). Aggressive: Good; Stupid: bad. Let's just hope they learned their lesson and GIVE IT TO HYDE!! (er.....a.....Elliot)
Overall: B
51-14 and I give a B?!? Look at the competition. I want perfection. I want swagger. I want a team with pride to never yield an inch. This team was a little loose as the game went on. Play until zeros. No....Quarter...
Bring on the Spartans!
