Grading the Bucks: Week 6--Maryland

Offense: B
Amazing how the woes of the red zone disappear when Mr. Barrett enters at QB.  In all fairness, Cardale did have a nice day, but the indecision is still there.  Also, he was majorly bailed out by Braxton on a simple seam route that was significantly overthrown.  Zeke was his normal awesome self.  I take exception with the O-line play that, in my opinion, is causing some of the issues on offense.  They simply aren't getting the explosive burst that I would like off the ball on run plays. Zeke is getting his, but primarily due to his skill, not the blocking up front. Still wondering why we haven't seen more of the Cardale down field throws.  The toss to Marshall was setup by great pass protection and we need more explosive plays of that variety.

Defense: D
This was concerning.  Running quarterbacks have always caused the Bullet defense to show some chinks in the armor.  The D-line has pass rushing ability, but they seem to have trouble plugging up the running lanes.  Maryland scored 4 TDs: 2 due to explosive plays that arose from defensive breakdowns, 1 that was methodical, and 1 that was in garbage time.  Let downs in the secondary are inexcusable as is the QB run TD.  Hiccups happen, but mistakes of the magnitude we saw against the likes of horrible Maryland can't continue.  Missed tackles reared their ugly head periodically this game as well.

Special Teams: B-
Great coverage on kicks/punts (huge hit by Fada was beautiful) and Johnston punted very well (55 yard net average).  Missed FG and kickoff out of bounds provide a serious downgrade.  This needs to stop.

Coaching: C+
Offense cooks under Barrett, but for some reason, the coaches only let him operate in the red zone.  If you only trust one QB in the red zone, that's your QB.  Cardale was ok in this game, but still far too indecisive to trust as a leader on the field.  Let JT orchestrate the red zone offense in a decisive manner from any location on the field.  Defensively, the front seven need to work on the rush defense and the linebackers need  to attack in a more decisive manner.

Overall: C
21 point victory and it only yields a C? Darn right.  There was no excuse for this sorry Maryland team to score 28 points.  None.  Offensively, there was improvement (wonder why?) but major stepback defensively.  There are still more 'warm up' games, but it's time to stop the 'preseason' mentality and bring everything to the table every game.  We need to start bullying teams and remind everyone why OSU was/is the juggernaut everyone expected.

Week 6 - I Went Back to Ohio...

Standings
1) Seeberg               19-7    (0-5 upset)
2) Draper                 17-9    (3-2 upset)
3) Schweinfurth     16-10    (1-4 upset)
3) Hoying                16-10    (1-4 upset)

A few loyal fans in Buckeye Nation may have been a bit worried at times on Saturday, but Ohio State is coming home after another tough road test, still undefeated and #1 in both polls (ay, oh, way to go, Ohio). The ranks of the undefeateds also feature a few surprise teams that find themselves in put-up-or-shut-up games this week. When the dust settles, we'll have a better idea of who are the contenders, and who are the pretenders.

Navy Midshipmen @ Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Draper: Navy finally got over the hurdle vs. the Irish but for this contest, we return to South Bend and an angry Irish squad.  I'll be honest, I was surprised with the fight that ND showed at Death Valley.  The option attack puts up some points, but not enough as the Midshipman falls short under the shadow of touchdown Jesus.  Navy: 24--ND: 31
Hoying: It's October and Navy is still undefeated! Sure, they have 4 wins vs. crap, but that was Notre Dame's entire resume until they Clemsoned against Clemson last week. The Irish are blowing through QBs as fast as a certain other team near and dear to our hearts, yet still getting pretty consistent play (except on 2-point conversions, but I don't think Malik Zaire is calling the plays). Navy doesn't really have to worry about their passing game, focusing instead on how many ligaments their O-line can snap in opposing defenses' knees as they cut block all over the field. The United States Armed Forces offense enjoys a tactical advantage but their officers-in-training aren't quite as home on the football field as on the battlefield. Navy: 21--ND: 31
Schweinfurth: Even with the injuries, Notre Dame is still the better team here.  The Navy option game is like playing a shell game. The Irish see it every year and usually handle Navy pretty well. Navy's offense will keep them in this game but Notre Dame is just too much. Navy: 21--ND: 28

Seeberg:  Navy spoiled my upset pick last week as they are very at-home in the water... I mean that both as a terrible joke and also literally in football terms with their triple-option rushing attack.  As a result they are the undefeated team in this matchup- a matchup Navy has kept very close the last couple years, scoring 34 and 39 points respectively in narrow defeats.  I see a similar game playing out here, though slightly lower scoring.  Navy will get some traction in the triple-option, but Zaire has proven a more than capable backup and he will keep ND up enough on the scoreboard that Navy will be forced to throw late, spelling their doom.  NAVY: 27--ND: 35

Northwestern Wildcats @ Michigan Wolverines
Draper:  Northwestern is just chugging along like a machine right now.  Everything is set up for the Wildcats to have success (aka no OSU on the schedule).  Just 2 years ago, Evanston was rocking after a 6-0 start that the Buckeyes squelched (and backdoor covered).  Has NW turned the corner, or is it time for TSUN to believe again?  Michigan has shellacked an overrated (albeit still good) BYU team and a pathetic Maryland squad.  Are they that good? I don't think so.  Can they beat the Wildcats at home? Sure why not.  Adds more fuel to the Sun and Blue fire.  Sorry Greeny.  NW: 16--UM: 20
Hoying: As soon as Harbaugh was hired, I predicted the immediate resurrection of That Demon Up North. QB Jake Rudock wasn't ready for prime time against a better-than-expected Utah team, but the Maize and Blue have looked the part since, pitching back-to-back shutouts against...2 bad offenses. And look! Another bad offense is coming to town! The B1G enjoyed last week's Iowa-Wisconsin game so much that they scheduled a sequel. Northwestern runs the ball as well as anyone, but they can't throw (are we picking the Navy game again?). Kind of sounds like...Michigan. This would be a great opportunity for Northwestern's coming out party, but they're facing their slight superiors in every phase of the game...on the road. Big picture: it's better this game isn't in Evanston, or the Wildcats would be broken for another 2 years after another devastating loss. NW: 9--Mich: 13

Schweinfurth: Raise your hand if you saw one loss between these two teams at this point in the season. Anyone? I didn't think so. TUN has looked good against some "decent" competition (if you count a BYU team that won two games on Hail Mary's decent). Northwestern's defense has looked good this year and shut down a pretty good Stanford team. The Cardinal have a better QB than Jake Rudock and Northwestern just confused him. The Wolverines run a very similar offense to Stanford but worse. I'll take the Wildcats in an upset. Can't wait to see the look on Khaki Man's face. NW: 17--UM: 14
Seeberg:  Pains me to admit it, but these may be the two most consistent, competent teams in the B1G thus far.  Both feature very stingy defenses and offenses that, with Jake Rudock beginning to understand which jerseys to throw to, limit mistakes and don't stop themselves too often (imagine if the Bucks did that??).  TTUN actually opened as 10-point favorites which I find shocking because it's reasonably plausible that neither team even scores 10 points.  It's not likely to be pretty, but the maize and blue are about to make some noise in the B1G again.  Heaven help us.  NW: 13--MICH: 20

California Bears @ Utah Utes

Draper:  Cal is undefeated after feasting on terrible defenses...but note those teams also feasted on their defense.  Goff and the Bears are fun to watch, but no one is really taking them seriously...yet.  Utah is the current flavor of the month after obliterating Oregon in Eugene, but how good is Oregon, really?  That being said, I want the team that has at least a small semblance of a defense.  Cal is fun, but Utah is better.  Salt Lake City will be rockin as usual.  Cal: 34--Utah: 45
Hoying: Stop me if you've heard this one before. Cal has a skinny little twig at QB putting up ridiculous numbers as the Bear offense rolls along...and actually stops their opponents on a drive or two?!? That's right, Cal has shut down the HIGH-POWERED Texas, Washington, and Washington State attacks on their way to a 5-0 start. The Utes, led by somewhat disappointing RB Devontae Booker and dual-threat QB Travis Wilson, will pose a bit of a tougher challenge to the Cal defense, but it's not like Cal QB Jared Moss...er...Goff is going anywhere. Utah may have held Oregon to 20 points, but Cal's attack is undoubtedly better. It won't be enough, especially with 2 weeks for the Utes to prepare, but Cal's rise continues with a hard-fought close loss. Cal: 27--Utah: 34

Schweinfurth: I've watched a little of Utah and none of Cal. Utah has been pretty impressive and it will be interesting once they play some better teams in the PAC-12. Until then, the Utes win. Cal: 28--Utah: 42
Seeberg:  Hey Cal is 5-0, who knew?  They even have 3 wins over power 5 opponents.  Unfortunately, those wins are a by a combined 13 points over Texas, Washington and Washington State.  Those three teams have a COMBINED 1 win over power 5 schools, WSU's 3-point win over powerhouse *cough not so much cough* Rutgers.  Had Cal seen Utah the week after blasting Oregon, they might have gotten the Utes squad on a letdown week and kept it close enough to pull off the upset.  Not with two weeks to prepare for the Utes though.  I don't know how "for real" either team is, but my money is on Utah. CAL: 21--UTAH: 38

Baylor Bears @ Kansas Jayhawks

Draper: This....is gonna be gross.  I expect Art Briles to pour it on as much as he can before being arrested for beating the stepson.  The important question is: Will Kansas score? The shutout is a tall order, considering the Baylor drives should last about 2 plays on average.  The Baylor defense will be super tired, but I think they'll go for it.  BU: 70--KU: 0
Hoying: Oh, those crafty Bears. While Ohio State, TCU, Alabama, Michigan State, Auburn, Oregon, USC, Georgia, Florida State, Notre Dame, Clemson, UCLA, LSU, Arizona State, Georgia Tech, Ole Miss, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Wisconsin, Stanford, Arizona, Boise State, Missouri, and Tennessee have each found themselves in tight spots in this young season, Baylor hasn't been close to being touched, thanks to their masterful scheduling. And the hits keep right on rolling as the Bears visit the winless Jayhawks, the only 1-A team to lose to Rutgers this season. In 2007, Kansas went 12-1 and beat Baylor 58-10 in Lawrence. The Jayhawk faithful would do well to stay home and watch that one again. Then cry. BU: 63--KU: 7
Schweinfurth: Are we picking this against the spread? Even if we did, Baylor would win. Kansas is SOOOOOOOO bad. Baylor may try to break the scoreboard. BU: 70--KU: 7
Seeberg:  Not 100% sure why we're picking this one.  4-0 Baylor, 0-4 Kansas.  Oh, and Kansas is starting its true freshman 3rd-string QB due to injuries to the top two signal-callers.  Will Baylor score 100?  It's conceivable.  This is a pad-your-stats game for the crew of Let's Go Bucks.  Baylor rolls and rolls and rolls some more.  BU: 77--KU: 13

Maryland Terrapins @ THE Ohio State University Buckeyes

Draper: Maryland is bad....I mean, really, REALLY bad.  The program has all but confirmed that Edsall will be out as soon as our game ends.  IU may not be great, but they're having a nice season and improving.  Maryland is moving in the other direction.  Once again, this is the perfect medicine for a struggling Buckeye offense.  Cardale still can't diagnose a defense and has lost the trust of the coaches.  Zeke will continue carrying the load, but the rest of the weapons need to step up.  Marshall needs to hold on to the ball, JT needs to run the option (what? he's not the QB yet? Why?), Michael Thomas needs to see more balls his way, etc.  The defense had too many lapses that led to big plays last week.  Firm it up and we're back on track.  MD: 9--OSU: 48

Hoying: Remember the Michigan State game in 1998? The Purdue game in 2009? Almost every great team seems to have that one game against an inferior opponent on which nothing seems to go right. This season, every game feels like that, except that the Buckeyes keep winning. Imagine what would happen if the Buckeyes played well, or averagely. For the next 5 games, it would probably mean a 30-40 point blowout. But for that to happen, Ohio State needs to overcome penalties, turnovers, and third down and red zone futility. There seems to be an easy answer (*cough JT Barrett cough*) but we'll have to wait for Cardale to come around and achieve the Craig Krenzel-level athletic greatness we know he can reach. Best news: Maryland is BAD, like worse than any of our other incredibly crappy opponents bad, so we can afford to do whatever the hell we think will help work out the kinks, without worrying about actually putting points on the board. Still, it would be nice to see us dominate just once before the tough games start, for the benefit of the collective cardiac health of the Let's Go Bucks! crew. I'm not 16 anymore like I was in 2002. MD: 6--OSU: 35
Schweinfurth: Maryland is the team Ohio State needs to play right now. Everyone says the Buckeye offense is worse this year, but the stats say otherwise. The big difference this year is the turnovers. Urban has had the team working hard at protecting the ball better (should have been done in camp). Urban has also emphasized getting Samuel and Miller more involved in the offense. Is this the week we finally see some short screens to Braxton and get him in space? I'm gonna call for Marshall to catch a deep ball and Miller shows some flashes. If Zeke gets his 20 carries, he gets at least 200 yards. I'm really not too worried about the Terps offense versus the Buckeye defense. I see 2 or 3 picks from the Silver Bullets and hopefully some Bosa shrugging in the backfield. This one gets ugly and we see JT in the 4th quarter. MD: 3--OSU: 42
Seeberg:  As- crap, what's the politically correct phrase- severely lacking in talent and execution (read:  bad) as Maryland is, I'm intrigued for this game.  Granted the weather was lousy, but TTUN went to Maryland and pitched their second straight shut out.  If our defense is as elite as we'd like to think it is (I personally think it's solid, but not elite yet), we better come close to pitching a shutout as well.  I'm also curious if we'll throw a slant, or a crossing route, or an in route, or ANY route within 15 yards of the line of scrimmage that isn't a swing pass or a pop pass.  Aside from Michael Thomas I don't know if our receivers are getting consistent separation, which might be the reason for the odd playcalling, but all the more reason to keep routes short so Cardale doesn't have to hang in the pocket too long before looking to run or for a safety valve.  In any case, a healthy dose of N-S Zeke (that would be North-South Zeke, fyi), some better play-calling (one hopes), and a solid defensive effort should make this one a lot less harrowing than IU.  MD: 10--OSU: 45

Upset Special

Draper: Texas over Oklahoma (because football makes no sense)
Hoying: West Virginia over Oklahoma State
Schweinfurth: Illinois over Iowa
Seeberg:  Missouri over Florida

Grading the Bucks: Week 7--Maryland

Welcome to the B1G Maryland! Sadly, you didn't pull Michigan like Rutgers did.

Offense: A
J.T. Barrett.  That's all that needs to be said.  He is currently on pace to DEMOLISH Troy Smith's single season TD pass record by more than 10 TDs. Doubtful that he can keep up this frenetic pace, but why not? The defenses aren't getting better (other than Nov. 8th) and the offense has improved each an every week.  Virginia Tech is a horrible stain on the resume, but in the category of 'what have you done for me lately', no team has been more impressive on offense.  Zeke is really churning it out on the ground (see the dominant first drive) and Wilson seems to be an explosive play waiting to happen (although we've been waiting for an awfully long time).  If the O-line can keep Barrett upright and these receivers keep improving (Good God Michael Thomas...Uncle Keyshawn taught you well), watch out for the Bucks going forward.  The one stain on the offense continues to be picking up a 3rd or 4th and short.  GIVE IT TO HYDE--Sorry, PTSD from B1G championship-- ZEKE!! The I-formation its uses.

Defense: B+
The pass defense is still getting hammered and I just don't get it.  Yes, there was another 'oops' play on Saturday, and that can't happen, but you can't compare this defense to a Tressel defense point by point.  I do believe that Tressel/Heacock defenses were superior but the point totals don't do this team any favors.  When your offense scores 50+, it's nearly impossible to keep an opponent below 10 or even 20 (sorry Kent State).  The stats (yards/points) aren't a fair comparison.  The safety play is still subpar but the D-line is phenomenal (Bosa....freak of nature).  I've been very impressed with the progression of the linebackers but that may be due to the emergence of Raekwon McMillon.  Curtis Grant is a fantastic run stopper, but a detriment in the passing game.  Raekwon and Darron Lee are improving by leaps and bounds.  Now, if Powell, Apple, and Bell can get it together, it's time to get excited.

Special Teams: B-
Eh....again, nothing memorable comes to mind in this game.  Maybe something happened, but nothing special. The downgrade is not due to missing the long field goal (that happens), but stop kicking the ball out of bounds on kickoffs!  Nothing wrong with a touchback.  Yeah, we pinned them at the 10 on a kickoff once, but you can never ever give them a starting field at the 40.

Coaching: B
The offense is chugging and the defense is improving, but I continue to be dumbfounded with some of the stupid decisions to go for it on fourth down.  I get the desire and want, but sometimes, a kick is the best decision from a utility standpoint.  Being aggressive is not a bad thing, but it is also important to call good plays if you decide to roll the dice.  4th and 1 continues to stymie this team because the offensive playcalling refuses to call a straight up dive.  We're OSU! We're bigger, stronger, and just simply better!  Snap the ball, and force the ball pass the chains when needed.  These sweeps and shotgun snaps are nice and sparkly, but sometimes, you just need to bulldoze.

Overall: A-
Keep rolling along.  I love the improvement week to week.  Sadly, the true measuring stick won't arrive until Nov. 8.  All we can do is keep dominating the opposition in preparation for the end game.

Bonus: Everyone keeps spouting off that the B1G is a pipe dream of making the playoff.  If they give anyone a chance, it's Sparty.  I'm here to be Aaron Rodgers and to tell you to R-E-L-A-X.  If the Bucks take care of business, there's a really good chance to be there at the end.  Don't underestimate the power of 'how they are playing at the end of the season' and more importantly, the attrition that will follow.  I've heard talking heads say the Big Ten needs another Saturday of carnage like this past Saturday.  Here's the secret: 1 more day of Armageddon is unlikely, but many more days with semi-Armageddon is a virtual certainty.  The Bucks need to handle their business and avoid the craziness while letting the other teams crap the bed.  Trust me: the others will oblige.

Week 6 - The Season Has Finally Arrived

Standings
1) Draper               15-6    (3-2 upset)
1) Schweinfurth     15-6    (2-3 upset)
1) Seeberg              15-6    (0-5 upset)
4) Hoying               14-7    (2-3 upset)

Following the most boring week ever at Let's Go Bucks!, in which each of us picked the favorite in every game and they all won, Week 6 finally provides a terrific slate of ranked and undefeated matchups, including 3 from the seemingly untouchable SEC West. Since there are so many, the write-ups will each be a bit shorter this week, but the "quantity over quality" mentality has never failed us before.

Arizona Wildcats @ Oregon Ducks
Draper: RichRod has the offense rolling in Zona and capped it off with a Hail Mary win over Cal, but the Ducks are not the Bears.  The Ducks have looked great all year and they get another stage vs. an undefeated Cats squad (although they are a bit overrated).  Mariota grabs hold of the Heisman frontrunner position with another big game as the Autzen crowd is too much for RichRod and company.  High scoring, but not particularly close.  Zona: 34--Ore: 52
Hoying: If you (like me) don't get the Pac-12 Network or (unlike me) don't stay up until 2 AM ET to watch college football, you may have missed Arizona's ridiculous comeback against Cal to push the 'Cats to 4-0, the best game of the year so far. Arizona hasn't beaten anyone of note, and they haven't looked impressive doing it. Speed bump against Washington State aside, Oregon has. Could this be a week Brady Hoke picks up a win on DickRod? Zona: 27--Ore: 48
Schweinfurth: Rich Rod has the Wildcats at 4-0!?! I guess TTUN should have given that non-Michigan Man more time (at least he doesn't play concussed QBs).  But I digress.  This game is going to be a straight up shoot-out.  Both teams have very potent offenses and pretty much meh defenses.  I fully expect this to come down to the last possession but this game is in Eugene.  The Ducks do not lose in Eugene. Zona: 42--Ore: 49
Seeberg:  This one should be an enjoyable watch.  Michigan State scored nearly 30 against Oregon at their place and their offense is not nearly as prolific as the one the Wildcats possess.  However, MSU's D is far superior to Arizona's, and it is likely that Oregon will be scoring at will.  Needing a 36-point fourth quarter against Cal?  Doesn't sound like a team capable of springing the upset.  Quack on.  Zona: 31--Ore: 55

Texas A&M Aggies @ Mississippi State Bulldogs
Draper: Texas A&M has captured the nation's eye with wins over South Carolina (overrated) and Arkansas (eh...) but MSU went into Death Valley and took down the Bayou Bengals.  Dak Prescott has Dan Mullen's team churning and I expect more of the same against an overrated A&M defense.  The Aggies showed some vulnerability to the run vs. the Razorbacks.  Let's not forget that Starkville used to be one of the toughest places to play with those cowbells.  Kenny Hill still runs a nice offense under Kevin Sumlin, but they came a little bit back down to earth last week.  I'm going with CLANGA! TAMU: 20--MSU: 27
Hoying: Bert "Karma" Bielema's Razorbacks put a scare into A&M last week, while Mississippi State was still at home celebrating a rare road win at LSU. The Bulldogs can run the ball almost as well as Arkansas, and MSU QB Dak Prescott is coming along nicely as a sleeper Heisman pick in this young season. I said last week that a one-dimensional team wasn't going to beat the Aggies, but Mississippi State has just the right offensive formula, along with a D that punished LSU for three quarters until they realized they weren't supposed to win. Hey Bulldog! TAMU: 24--MSU: 27
Schweinfurth: Is there a more overrated team than Mississippi State?  I really don't think so.  That win over LSU was nice but the hype the Dogs are getting is a bit much (SEC bias much).  As far as A&M goes, I don't trust their defense but that offense is some kind of machine.  Look for Kenny Hill to keep up this tear he is on.  This one may be close for a half but A&M will just flat outscore the Bulldogs.  TAMU: 42--MSU: 31
Seeberg:  Mississippi State looked shot out of a cannon last week, jumping out to a big lead before NOT pulling a Wisconsin and hanging on to beat LSU.  The Bulldogs run it well, and A&M is a leaky sieve when it comes to run D.  All signs point to another big MSU win and a top 10 ranking...which is exactly why I'm picking the Aggies.  It's been a long time since Miss St. has played a game of this magnitude, and they're just not quite ready.  A&M scores just enough to outlast Mullen's crew.  TAMU: 38--MSU: 35

Nebraska Cornhuskers @ Michigan State Spartans
Draper: This may the second biggest game in the B1G this year.  Ameer Abdullah has been fantastic this year, but that's about the only plus in Lincoln.  Time for a wakeup call as the Spartans provide some real competition.  Connor Cook and Sparty have been rolling after the loss in Autzen.  I don't think the Huskers have the horses to keep up with MSU in East Lansing.  The Spartans keep it going before the big game vs. the Buckeyes. Neb: 17--MSU: 31
Hoying: This will probably be the meeting of the two highest-ranked teams in the B1G, but it matters so little in the conference scheme. The OSU/MSU winner should take the East, and the Nebraska/Wisconsin winner should represent the West, regardless of the outcome of this game. But I still need to pick a winner, so here we go: Michigan State is still riding the hype from last year's Rose Bowl win. They've blown out their slate of nobodies, but they lost to Oregon by multiple scores. Nebraska is quietly putting together a nice season after the McNeese near-disaster, led by the B1G's best rusher, Ameer Abdullah. AA has 2 100-yard games against Nebraska, and I see no reason why he won't do it again. We've seen what an elite RB can do to the Spartan defense; Husker fans had better hope that Herman-style play calling doesn't take them from sure victory to Bo Pelini Land. Neb: 31--MSU: 27
Schweinfurth: This is a benchmark game for Nebraska.  A win by the Huskers could show that they are one of the top teams in the B1G.  A loss says they are still a second tier team.  Michigan State is going to force Tommy Armstrong to throw the ball, as well they should.  Armstrong can be erratic and only complets just over 50% of his passes.  Connor Cook has done a good job of managing the Spartan offense this year and should continue that trend.  Nebraska keeps it close but Sparty YES! Neb: 17--MSU: 21
Seeberg:  I know this is a "big game", two top 20 teams, potential conference supremacy at stake...but I just don't see it.  Michigan State is better in every phase with the exception of Abdullah trouncing tacklers to save a game against an FCS opponent while MSU hung 73 on a MAC squad.  This one will not be closer than the experts think.  Neb: 13--MSU: 34

Oklahoma Sooners @ Texas Christian Horned Frogs
Draper: TCU has turned into a perennial 'pretty good', but OU looks like a juggernaut this year.  The Sooners are mowing teams down and I don't expect anything different here.  No one has been paying attention to Trevor Knight and company because, you know, SEC, SEC, SEC, but after they 'hung on' to beat UT 34-10 (lolESPN) it's time to keep an eye on the boys from Norman.  OU: 31--TCU: 17
Hoying:
How about that TCU win over...Minnesota... The Horned Frogs have been thoroughly mediocre since joining the Big 12 (mod 12) and until they come up with a big win, there's a heavy presumption against believing that they can. Plus, Oklahoma has a win over an SEC team!!!!!!!1!! OU: 41--TCU: 20
Schweinfurth: TCU has played well so far this year, but here comes Big Game Bob and the Sooners.  Trevor Knight is one heck of a QB and has kind of gotten lost in the shuffle.  I'm not sure why we aren't hearing more about this Oklahoma team because they are GOOD.  I'll take that Oklahoma offense all day. OU: 38--TCU: 14
Seeberg:  TCU is undefeated and ranked and, therefore, the best team OU will have played to date, at least in theory.  Tennessee has arguably more talent, though inexperienced talent, and OU coasted to a win over the Volunteers.  TCU, meanwhile, has played nobody (Minnesota), nobody jr. (SMU) and even-nobodys-don't-know-this-guy (Samford).  Not exactly good preparation for Oklahoma.  Sooners roll again.  OU: 31--TCU: 13

Stanford Cardinal @ Notre Dame Fighting Irish
Draper: Notre Dame has looked really good with Everett Golson back under center, and the Cardinal are nearly impossible to figure out.  Stanford should have crushed USC based on the stats, but they couldn't finish.  Under the gaze of Touchdown Jesus, the Irish keep it rolling over a questionable Stanford squad.  It will be ugly, because that's how Stanford wants it, but the Irish will do just enough. Stan: 17--ND: 20
Hoying:
Notre Dame has looked impressive so far, but all of their wins are over total bottom-feeders. Meanwhile, the Cardinal stupided a game away against USC and needed everything in the bag to get by Washington last week. Since Stanford's resurgence, Notre Dame has gone 1-4 in this matchup, but that win featured Everett Golson behind center. In Notre Dame's undefeated 2012 regular season, Golson tossed 11 TDs. This year, he has 11 in the first 4 games. Onward to victory. Stan: 13--ND: 14
Schweinfurth: Notre Dame is undefeated and in the top 10!!! Let's take a look shall we?  Notre Dame's best win is against a historically bad Michigan team that puts the fun in dysfunction.  Hmm, sounds like a quality win? Last week, the Domers struggled against Syracuse giving up 5(!) turnovers.  Sanford has the nation's best defense their only loss is a flukey one against USC.  Seems to me that Stanford is better.  They are and they win a low scoring, close one.  Stan: 17--ND: 10
Seeberg:  Another game that, in theory, is a big one.  Notre Dame is still undefeated and in the top 10 despite a schedule that rivals TCU's thus far (see above) with Rice and the decrepit Michigan among their foes.  Stanford, however, struggled at Washington after leading 10-0.  I'd like to think I trust Stanford more, but it will be a nailbiter.  Stan: 27--ND: 20 (OT)

Alabama Crimson Tide @ Ole Miss Rebels
Draper:   Dr. Bo has kept the Rebels valid, but Bama is another monster all together.  The Tide defense has remained an immovable object, but Lane Kiffin has a relevant Bama offense with Blake Sims.  Yes, they enter the Grove which can be a tough place to play, but it's not one of the premier locations.  Tide rolls to remain the big dog in the big bad SEC West. Bama: 31--Miss: 20
Hoying:
Didn't we see this movie last year? Undefeated Mississippi plays undefeated Alabama, gets blasted, has a good-but-not-great season. Ole Miss has scooped up the garbage they've been dealt so far, but as long as the Tide can avoid the turnovers that let Florida hang around for a half, this one shouldn't be in question. Bama: 27--Miss: 14
Schweinfurth: Ole Miss had done a good job bringing in talent on both sides of the ball.  No whether or not that talent can hang with Bama or not is yet to be seen.  There is a big part of me that likes the Rebles in this game.  Right now it seems that, if you can shut down Amari Cooper and Yeldon, you can shut down the Tide offense.  I think both stay contained and we get more *narrative* on how deep the SEC is.  Bama: 28--Miss: 31
Seeberg:  This one is terrifying to pick.  Both Mississippi schools have top 6, undefeated, divisional foes coming into town.  The odds of both failing is remote.  I truly believe 'Bama will lose at least three games this season, much like their 2010 campaign.  No time like the present to turn the Tide (see what I did there??).  The Grove will be partying into the wee hours Bama: 17--Miss: 27

LSU Tigers @ Auburn Tigers
Draper: Auburn is undefeated, but they simply don't look like the freakish offensive juggernaut from last year.  That being said, LSU has also appeared to take a step back.  Nick Marshall is keeping the offense solid, but the loss of Tre Mason is rearing its head.  The main difference in Auburn is a defense that doesn't have the playmakers from the SEC champion squad of 2013.  Jordan Hare makes the difference as Auburn wins a close one to stay the top Tigers in the SEC. LSU: 24--Aub: 34
Hoying:
Y'all is Tiger bait. Auburn's rushing attack continues to roll on behind RB Curtis Artis-Payne and QB Nick Marshall, while LSU is suffering a bit of an offensive identity crisis without Zach Ermahgerd taking snaps. Sure, they crushed New Mexico State, but that doesn't erase an ugly home loss to Mississippi State that a furious comeback can't obscure. Auburn will be looking for revenge after their only SEC blemish of a magical 2013 season, and they'll get it. LSU: 24--Aub: 28
Schweinfurth: It's time for the real Auburn to stand up.  I never looked at Auburn as a great team last year and they got lucky in a few big games.  The nation has had time to see this rushing attack for a few years and it's about time someone figures out how to stop it.  As crazy as Les Miles is, I think he's the guy that cracks the code.  LSU: 24--Aub: 21
Seeberg:  MAN there are a lot of great games this week.  About time!  Except, of course, they're tough to pick.  LSU is angry even after destroying New Mexico State, and Auburn looked pretty pedestrian against their lone opponent of consequence, squeaking out a 20-14 win at Kansas State.  Quite frankly, and superstitiously, I think Jordan Hare has exhausted its magic for this decade.  Time for the SEC West to beat the living daylights out of each other until everyone is tied at 6-2.  LSU: 31--Aub: 23

THE Ohio State University Buckeyes @ Maryland Terrapins
Draper: Welcome to the B1G Maryland.  We'll get you started with the big dog.  The Bucks roll into College Park on a high note after having their way with the Bearcats defense.  The Terps have looked pretty good thus far, but OSU is a different animal.  The pass defense of the Bullets can't give up the big play as they did repeatedly against Gunner Kiel, but I don't think the QB in Maryland (whoever ends up playing) has the chops to make the big throws.  That being said, look out for Stefon Diggs who was targeted by Urban but fell through the cracks to the Terps.  He has some big time talent, but it's not enough.  Barrett continues some stellar QB play and Zeke moves the chains. Bucks win. OSU: 38--Maryland: 20
Hoying: Everyone laughed when the B1G decided to add Maryland and Rutgers, but these two teams are each a late score away from being undefeated atop the B1G East standings. The Terps have been getting it done with great QB play from C.J. Brown, but he sprained is wrist against Indiana and may be limited against Ohio State. Maryland is also missing one of their starting corners, Alvin Hill, so the Buckeyes may enjoy a significant pass game advantage this Saturday. Couple that with EzE's coming out party against Cincinnati and Maryland's over-reliance on the injured Brown's running ability, and you have the ingredients of a solid, though close, Buckeye victory. OSU: 38--Maryland: 27
Schweinfurth: This is another big test for the Ohio State secondary.  Everyone wants to criticize the Buckeye secondary, and I understand that.  Those three plays were BAD.  The good news is that those mistakes are now on film and the coaches can make some adjustments. As for Maryland, Stefon Diggs is the real deal.  The two QBs the Terps are gonna toss out there could cause a bit of confusion.  This Buckeye offense is looking very potent and has put up 50+ the last two games.  Welcome to the B1G Maryland.  This one is close for a quarter. OSU: 42--Maryland: 21
Seeberg:  Hmmm, why are the Bucks playing another out-of-conf...oh yeah, nevermind.  Gonna take some getting used to.  In any event, all appeared to be as expected last week in our dismantling of Cincinnati.  The pass D was suspect, but the Terrapins do not have the same skill level across the board.  Dontre, to his credit, asked politely for more touches in the offense.  Give that man the ball Urban!  Lots of short to intermediate passes, Dontre touches it 17 times, scores twice, and the Bucks roll again.  OSU: 45--Maryland: 17

Week 6: Showdown in the B1G

Standings
1) Schweinfurth    18-2      (1-4 upset)
2) Draper             17-3      (1-4 upset)
3) Hoying             14-6      (1-4 upset)

Washington Huskies @ Stanford Cardinal
Draper: This is the toughest call of the week for me.  I really want to pick the Huskies and I would do it without hesitation if the game was in Seattle. You know what? Let's do it.  Keith Price has been fantastic all year, and Stanford has just seemed to sleepwalk through most of their schedule.  THe Huskies are coming back to prominence and I don't think the Cardinal have an identity. Are they a running team? Passing? Defense? Sark steals one on the road to throw the national pundits prediction into a tailspin and make Oregon start to look ahead to next week. UW: 24--Stan: 20
Hoying: The late game on Upstart Saturday features a matchup of the dark horse candidates from each Pac-12 division.  It's odd to see Stanford as the established power and Washington seeking respect, but this game may reveal a great deal about the future of the pecking order out west.  Both teams feature terrific QB play, but contrary to preseason predictions, Washington has been the squad with the shut-down D.  The high-powered Illini (don't laugh) and Arizona attacks were limited by the Huskies, and Boise State's O was completely obliterated.  I foresee Stanford QB Kevin Hogan and the Cardinal suffering the same fate.  The Huskies keep pace with Oregon in the North.  UW: 28--Stan: 20
Schweinfurth: This is a tough one.  In close games, QBs can make all the difference and Keith Price is a good one.  The Huskies have looked good all season and Stanford is ripe for the picking.  Yes, the Cardinal defense is good, but that offense is meh.  As I said, this will be close but Washington takes control of their PAC-12 destiny this week.  UW: 31--Stan: 20

Maryland Terrapins @ Florida State Seminoles
Draper: This game shouldn't be close.  Yes, the Terrapins are undefeated and, yes, the Noles sleepwalked through the BC first half, but FSU is FAR better.  Randy Edsall is doing some good thing in College Park, but Jameis Winston and his bevy of extremely talented receivers will get it done in Doak.  FSU keeps rolling Mary: 20--FSU: 45
Hoying: Are the Seminoles vulnerable?  Everyone points to the upcoming FSU-Clemson showdown as the coronation ceremony for the ACC champion, but the Noles struggled mightily against a bad Boston College team a week ago.  Freshman QB Jameis Winston is, well, a freshman, and the shine is off the apple a bit after his ridiculous start.  On the other hand, can Maryland handle success?  The Terps haven't been in serious ACC title consideration for several years, and while the crushing victory over WVU is nice, FSU will be quite a stiffer test.  Wins for visitors in Tallahassee come at a premium, and I don't think Maryland is quite to the point of challenging the Noles on their home turf.  Terrapins lose a close one.  Mary: 20--FSU:24
Schweinfurth: Maryland is having a great season so far (B1G! B1G!) but I still feel the Terrps are a mediocre team.  Florida State is clearly looking like the class of the ACC and Jameis Winston sure looks like the real deal.  I expect a close first half but FSU makes the adjustments and rolls in the second half.     Mary: 27--FSU: 45

Arizona State Sun Devils @ Notre Dame Fighting Irish
Draper: The Sun Devils are on cloud nine after being the final nail in the coffin for Lane Kiffin and, let's be honest, the Irish just aren't very good.  Yes, it's in South Bend, but they're hurting after the Sooners reminded them that last year was a fluke. ASU has had the magic touch with the refs handing them the Wisky game, and I'm seeing some more late game magic under the outstretched arms of Touchdown Jesus.  The Devils defeat the Domers (uh oh...) in heartbreaking fashion.  ASU: 31--ND: 30
Hoying: If Tommy Rees could complete a pass to one of his own receivers, last week's tilt against Oklahoma would have been a terrific back-and-forth slugfest.  Time to shake up my magic 9-ball and ask "Will Tommy Rees play well this week?"  "My sources say no."  What are your mystical sources, magic 9-ball?  Why do they always say no?  ASU: 27--ND: 20
Schweinfurth: As I have written here in the past, I don't think much of Notre Dame's defense this year.  I mean, they have been bruuutal.  Arizona State can put up points in bunches.  This is clearly a mismatch.  I expect the Devil's defense to get a couple of stops.  Those are the difference in a shootout.      ASU:42--ND: 38

THE Ohio State University Buckeyes @ Northwestern Wilcats
Draper: Put up, or shut up.  I've said all year that this game could be tougher than the Michigan game, and now I truly believe it.  The Wildcats believe they're on to something special and they're looking to get their first real statement win in the Fitzgerald era.  This is also a HUGE stage for Mr. Fitzgerald where I guarantee the eyes of Texas (and USC) will be upon him.  Unfortunately, they're still Northwestern.  The Buckeyes found that taking the foot off the gas last week led to a little more drama than necessary.  Not this week.  The Bucks exert their big dog status and make a statement.  The Cat offense will score, but the Bucks score more...much more.  Look for some more deep throws to help open up the run game. Big win for the Buckeyes. OSU: 52--NW: 27
Hoying: Fun fact: Northwestern has won three Big Ten titles in the last 78 years: 1995, 1996, and 2000.  They did not play Ohio State in any of those seasons.  In fact, Ohio State has only lost to Northwestern once in the last 42 years (and I was there, sigh).  These are not your father's Wildcats, but they have a familiar-looking defense.  That's good news for an Ohio State offense accustomed to using quick starts to take control of games.  This game will look a lot like the Cal game.  Expect some quick scoring by the Bucks, followed by a decent fight put up by a potent Northwestern offense.  Hopefully, the margin in the 4th quarter will allow Urban to continue his late-game Tresselball, since Northwestern doesn't have the means to stop a healthy dose of Carlos Hyde up the middle.  OSU: 45--NW: 31
Schweinfurth: What a big win for the Bucks at home.  To me, that game was scoreboard close.  Braxton looked to have his rifle cocked and I wouldn't expect anything less this week.  The Buckeye offense is some kind of explosive.  Hyde will get his carries and I think Jordan Hall will reappear as well against a smaller defensive front 7.  The big question will be how the defense will fare against the two-headed QB monster Fitzgerald will throw out there.  Northwestern's offense is one that has given the Silver Bullets problems in the past, and I think they will put up some points.  Unfortunately for them, Ohio State's offense is better.  I expect the Buckeyes to jump all over the Wildcats early and then nurse a decent lead all game.             OSU: 49--NW: 24
