Grading the Bucks: Week 1--Indiana

We are all miserable people.  I'll be honest, there were some moments in the first half where I caught myself being miserable.  "Why did he throw it away? How'd he miss that block? Can anyone cover Cobbs?" This was certainly not the prettiest game of all time, but it was just fine for a season opener.  I have heard more whining and complaining these past few days than normal in Columbus.  JT sucks, the receivers suck, the secondary sucks, get rid of the coaches, blah blah blah.  Many is Buckeye Nation will call me an apologist but let's get real.
1) USC was in a dogfight with Western Michigan at home
2) Texas got straight up beat by an inferior Maryland squad
3) Washington farted around with Rutgers
4) Louisville and the reigning Heisman winner had to fend off Purdue.
5) South Florida struggled with Stony Brook.
6) Baylor lost to an abstract construct.
7) UNLV fell in the greatest upset of all time against a guy named Howard

...but JT didn't complete every pass and Indiana crossed the 50...

I will dissect the Buckeyes game (briefly) and I will knock some of the issues we absolutely had, but we beat a decent (not great, but decent--I'd say 6-7 wins but the schedule is tough) IU squad at home, at night, in one of the biggest games in their history BY 28 FREAKING POINTS.  Honestly, this is a coach's dream game.  Comfortable win, some adversity, no turnovers, plenty of teachable moments.

Offense: B
While my intro defended JT a great deal, this was not the performance I was hoping for.  It wasn't a bad performance like everyone would have you believe, but I was hoping for more.  I think the main issue is his absolute aversion to turnovers.  Don't get me wrong, that's a great thing...but you need to take some risks and he's still hesitant.  It will (should?!?) come as the year progresses, but I was hoping to see a little more Brett Favre gunslinging (by the way, if he does start taking risks, I'm going to go ballistic when he gets skewered for throwing a pick or two).  Also, stop arguing that the passing yards are mostly YAC.  JT just needs to loosen up on a few deep balls a game and we'll be fine.  The athletes at wide receiver aren't Calvin Johnsons, they're Percy Harvins (YAC type receivers).  JT is built for that. On the "hey, that's cool" side, meet J.K. Dobbins.  What a welcome debut in Bloomington.  I wish he didn't have to break so many tackles, but I like the fact he did it.  The big question is what's up with Weber.  I really don't think he'll be Wally Pipped, but the talking heads have anointed Dobbins as the second coming.  Don't forget how freakishly good Mike Weber was/is.  I would not be surprised in the slightest for a 60-40 Weber split in touches next week (and that's ok).  The biggest problem is sharing the load with all this talent.  With regard to the receivers, we saw the entire gamut.  Paris Campbell really fast and good and Paris Campbell dropsy drop.  The halftime adjustments saw these guys getting many more touches in the second half with 10 yard passes...and that's JT's specialty.  Keep feeding them and they'll be fine...but don't drop perfectly throw bombs...your QB needs credit for those.

Defense: B+
Again, definitely things to clean up, but not a bad first outing.  The secondary is a green as...something that is really green (grass is too lame) and they got better as the game progressed.  Also, Simmie Cobbs is really freaking good (might be the best receiver we face in the regular season).  The defensive line was as good as advertised and will just be a nightmare for teams all year.  There were a few miscommuncation plays but that's expected early on.  I heard the broadcast (and Buckeye twitter) wondering how Lagow was throwing into tight windows so why can't JT? Just remember that Lagow also threw 2 picks.  That's the trade off.  Be careful what you wish for (to restate, I would like a little more risk, but not as much as most....there is a delicate balance).  I would be remiss if I didn't mention one of the greatest plays of all time (that didn't count).  Take a bow Robert Landers.  That's a Touchdown in my eyes.

Special Teams: B+
No missed PATs, No missed FGs, no fumbled punts (woot), no kickoffs out of bounds (also woot).  I'm still concerned with the risk reward of kicking short and attempting to pin people inside the 25.  It works a lot, but is that extra 5 yards worth it when they break a decent return every once in a while.  I'm more conservative on the kickoff and prefer to boot it into the endzone every time.  I recall IU had a good return once, but it was a few days ago.  Overall, nothing stands out on special teams, which is usually a good thing (take note FSU).

Coaching: B
Nice debut for the new offensive coaches.  Not perfect, but nice.  I thought the halftime adjustments on both sides of the ball were fantastic which is a real testament to the talent on the coaching roster.  Kevin Wilson didn't go into a shell when things weren't working, but he tweaked until he found something that worked.  Defensive coaches seemed to see the man defense wasn't super hot in the first half so threw in some more zone later.  There were still some growing pains there, but outscoring an opponent 36-7 in the second half shows the dedication to training and concept.  Still want more progress from JT but it was a ok for game one with these receivers.  The decisions to go on 4th down were both correct decisions but the little jet sweep to Hill was a very curious playcall.  I'm glad Urban still knows basic math, but the play call on 4th and short should be a simple one.  They got cute and it cost them.

Overall: B+
Once again, 28 point win on the road, at night, in a hostile (sort of) environment (more than a normal IU game) in the first game of the season vs. a decent team with nothing to lose.  Buckeyes weren't uber sharp and there are certainly gaps to fill, but I'm happy we had a real test for these young freshman.  Oklahoma was trotting up and down the field last week, but I don't think they learned anything or got better last week.  Indiana provided a chance for the Buckeyes to get better and get fired up for one of the 3 biggest games on their calendar.  Game 1 to Game 2 usually yields the most improvement and I'm pumped for next week.

Week 1: On the Road Again

Yes, it sucks to start the season on the road, but just be thankful Kevin Wilson's reunion tour with the Scarlet and Gray isn't kicking off with one of those neutral-site abominations plaguing the remainder of the sport this week.

Michigan Wolverines vs. Florida Gators
Draper: Well, this game is my personal hell.  No clue what to expect here.  Michigan came out firing on all cylinders last year but all those studs are in the NFL now.  I truly believe they are supremely overrated....but...Florida seems to be the definition of mediocrity this year (and the recent past).  I don't think the Wolverines can make a statement for the CFP this year, they do have a returning QB who was pretty good last year and a coach that just seems to get results (maybe because his players are scared he'll eat them).  I'll lean Michigan just barely as their uniforms blind the Gators. UM: 24--UF: 20
Hoying: I wish I could write something intelligent about this game but Michigan refuses to release their roster and Florida won't name a starting QB. So I'll have to say something mindless instead. Did you see those new uniforms that the Maize and...well, Maize are wearing this Saturday? On the positive side, I don't think they'll burn out my eyes like UM's awful yellow-on-yellow b-ball jerseys, but this one's going to be ugly. And it could be a blowout, too. UM: 20--UF: 10
Schweinfurth: The headline for this game should be "Have you seen what TTUN is wearing?" This could be one of the worst uniforms ever (and I bet they break them out against the Buckeyes too). I really don't know what to expect from either team. Florida is suspending everyone and TTUN lost a ton of talent last year. Don't let Harbooger fool you, Speight will start and lead the offense to a one score win, making TTUN even more overrated than they already are. UM: 21--UF: 17
Seeberg:  Ugh, this is the college football equivalent of the Mayweather-McGregor fight where I hoped the pay-per-view cut out completely and both guys lost because neither got paid (admit it, you would've laughed your arse off if that happened).  At any rate, TTUN rolls their uniforms in cat urine and trots down south to take on the Gators.  I don't expect it to be a particularly pretty matchup as the Wolverines are replacing about as many starters as OSU was last year while Florida is, well, Florida:  Very good defense, middling offense, expectations always just a notch or two above any realistic outcomes.  Malik Zaire actually gives them a credible QB threat...if he starts over highly touted freshman Feleipe Franks.  Either way there won't be a lot of points, which is just how both teams prefer it.  In crunch time, I have to go with a proven commodity at QB and Speight makes just enough plays to, sadly, pull it out for the maize and more maize.  UM: 20--UF: 16

Florida State Seminoles vs. Alabama Crimson Tide
Draper: Bama has been starting with a big boy for the past few years (USC, PSU, etc.), but this is a real challenge.  The Noles are primed to make a run this year, but it can come crashing down (sort of) in week 1.  Honestly, this game is a perfect scenario for both teams.  The winner vaults to number 1 and is a prohibitive favorite for the playoff and the loser...is still right there in the running.  I wonder what kind of strides DeAndre Francois and the Noles have made this offseason.  Beating last year's UM team in the Orange Bowl was a nice feather in their cap, but Bama is a juggernaut that seems to be unstoppable (unless your name is Dabo).  Definitely a little heart in this pick, but I'll call for the upset.  Bama is a factory, but they have to run a little lower on talent when their roster is playing on Sundays, right...RIGHT!?!  Either way, I just hope it's not the traditional early season stomp by the Tide.  Go Noles! FSU: 31--Bama: 27
Hoying: The other day, I was listening to the good people at 97.1 The Fan try to list their top coaches of college football today. After the obvious top two (Nick and Urban), they filled out the second tier with Chris Petersen and Dabo Swinney, notably placing Jimbo Fisher somewhere down the line. It's hard to argue with recent results, with Clemson going to 2 straight national championships and claiming a win over Alabama. Florida State now has a golden opportunity to make a statement and regain their status as standard-bearer for the ACC. Can they do it? Probably not. Alabama has shown no signs of slowing down, they excel on the big stage, and they are pissed after gagging away a possible second straight national title. Florida State has lost the bulk of their receiving corps and their dynamic running back, Dalvin Cook. The good news for the Noles is that nobody on the committee will hold this loss against them (just don't get wrecked by 46 like USC did last year). FSU: 24--Bama: 31
Schweinfurth: Oh look, Bama playing a marquee matchup at a neutral site. Heaven forbid Saban actually has to play on someone else's home field. DeAndre Francois looked like a solid first year QB last season. Jalen Hurts on the other hand looked like a dynamic runner but throwing the ball was an issue. Yes, 'Bama reload every year, blah blah blah. So do the 'Noles. I'm excited for this game as it should be much better then the last few kickoff games. I got the 'Noles giving Saban two (!) losses in a row. FSU: 27--Bama: 24
Seeberg:  Make no mistake about this game kids, Alabama is the better football team.  There is a caveat, however.  Both have sophomore star-in-the-making QBs hoping to take a big leap forward this season.  Both lost a truckload of talent to the NFL.  However, Jalen Hurts is the less-skilled of the two QBs and he is forced to learn a new, NFL-complicated offense.  If this game were in about week 6 or later, it would be at least a two-possession win for the Tide, but right now, JUST right now, I trust the Seminoles a tad more.  FSU: 27--Bama: 20

West Virginia Mountaineers vs. Virginia Tech Hokies
Draper:  And now we come to the 'oh yeah, there's other games happening' portion. The crazy coach often comes out the victor Harbaugh, Saban, Fisher, Dabo, etc. and they don't get much crazier that Dana Holgorson.  West Virginia will come out trying to drop a hundo but the lunch pail defense will prevent that....but not enough to win.  Burn those couches as WVU gets an early jump on that 8-4 record (don't worry Hokies, you'll get there too)  WVU: 48--VT: 38
Hoying: Is it mid-October yet? No? Then I don't see West Virginia's annual slide starting anytime soon. WVU: 44--VT: 31
Schweinfurth: I don't know what to think of this game. I saw some pundits picking Virginia Tech as a sleeper (sounds like basketball). Bud Foster can give teams nightmares but I don't think VaTech has the offense to keep up. WVU: 45--VT: 35
Seeberg:  Despite Bud Foster still being at the defensive helm for the Hokies, this isn't your older brother's Frank Beamer Va Tech team.  They can score it, and score it relatively often.  Unfortunately, recruiting is down in Blacksburg and Foster isn't getting the premium talent he had during Beamer Ball's heyday.  Meanwhile, West Virginia is getting offensive talent from everywhere...and scoring was never really an issue there anyhow.  Expect the antithesis of the UM-Fla game (read:  actually fun to watch) with the Mountaineers pulling away late.  WVU: 48--VT: 33

THE Ohio State Buckeyes @ Indiana Hoosiers
Draper: I'm really excited about this year's Buckeye squad, particularly under center.  I truly believe that having actual live QB Coaches and offensive coordinators will do wonders for JT. The Hoosiers simply won't be the same with one of their more successful coaches of the past 20 years now championing the OSU offense.  The speed offense and short passing game is what JT's (and quite frankly, Urban's) offense is designed for, and Kevin Wilson runs it extremely well. Here's hoping Ryan Day improved JT's mechanics and we should see fireworks.  Let's not forget how studly Mike Weber was last year not to mention some criminally under-utilized receiving corps talent.  While so far I've only mentioned offense, the defense (particularly the line) should be the bread and butter of this team.  Bosa, Hubbard, Sprinkle, Lewis, Jones, and Holmes will likely all be playing on Sundays in the near future.  The front seven is loaded but there are a few question marks in the secondary.  IU actual provides a really nice tune up for the Sooners.  I don't anticipate this to be close.  The Buckeyes are hungry after last year's embarrassment.  Time to suit up. OSU: 59--IU: 10
Hoying: So, what do you do if you're Indiana? What is there to do when your offensive wizard of a coach is chased out after restoring your program to a semblance of respectability? Come roaring back with a new defensive identity. Unfortunately, it probably won't matter when the team you're facing has picked up that offensive wizard to call plays for them. The Buckeye O, while more or less effective over the last two seasons, has slowed a bit since JT's sensational freshman campaign, and their championship chances will largely rest on his development over his final year under Coach Wilson's steady hand. Having some competent receivers might not be a bad idea, either. OSU: 52--IU: 24
Schweinfurth: So many questions coming into this game: What will the offense look like? Can J.T. complete an intermediate pass? Can the receivers get open down field? What will the secondary look like? Can a Buckeye kicker make a damn field goal? Will there be a kickoff out of bounds in this game? (The answer to the last one is yes). The addition of Kevin Wilson and Ryan Day to the offensive staff can't be overlooked. It's been 2 years since J.T. had an actual QB coach and his mechanics and reads should be much better. I am worried about rotating 6 receivers. It almost sounds like the coaching staff is saying, "We don't know who is going to step up so everyone plays." The D-line play will be fun to watch. Schiano changed up the defensive front a bit so expect more sacks and domination up front. Ohio State will win this game, but we really need some of those questions answered.  OSU: 49--IU: 28
Seeberg:  Okay, I saved the jubilation for here, but COLLEGE FOOTBALL IS (INSERT FAVORITE EXPLETIVE OR STRING OF EXPLETIVES HERE) BACK!!!  Despite the name on the opponent's jersey (and the laughable resume that accompanies it) this is quite the intriguing matchup.  The Hoosiers offense has given the Buckeyes fits in recent years, keeping games close despite a wide talent disparity between the two programs except, somehow, at running back where Hoosier alum Tevin Coleman is currently running amok in the NFL akin to Zeke.  However, the alleged mastermind of said offense now works for the scarlet and gray.  Oops.  Yes the Buckeyes have a lot of weaknesses, like a secondary made up of...yeah, if you're reading this you don't know either.  But the front 4/6/19 studs that rotate in and out will wreak havoc upon opposing QBs so even if receivers are getting open they won't have the time to find them.  I expect a bit of rust, a bit of adrenaline, and, most importantly, a dominant OL and DL.  With those two pieces, everything else has a way of *cough 2014 cough* falling into place.  Enjoy everyone, Buckeye football is upon us again!  OSU: 45--IU: 17

Upset Special
Draper: App State over Georgia
Hoying: Rutgers over Washington
Schweinfurth: Georgia Tech over Tenn
Seeberg:  Youngstown State over Pitt

Grading the Bucks: Week 5--Indiana

Is this the new normal?

Offense (no Zeke): D- / Zeke: A
This offense just isn't clicking.  I'm petrified that we saw this week that the coaches don't trust the starting quarterback to throw a pass.  Cardale seems to be unable to go through his progressions and when he sees a receiver open, he fires it 100 mph and misses the receiver.  Zeke has been fantastic even when the entire defense knows he's coming (couldn't get going because IU had 10 people in the box every play).  Receiver play was eh as was the O-line.  O-line opened some holes for Zeke and protected fairly well.  Also, it needs to be said.  Jalin Marshall is a liability.  He has some flash and dash, but the crushing turnovers and overall stupid play is taking it's toll.  To his credit, he blocked very well, but the turnovers... Say what you will, but I believe QB and WR are the issues. Cardale's final stats weren't terrible, but based on what I saw, he wasn't up to acceptable standards.  I know I'm completely blinded by JT's greatness...but he needs to be there.  I want a leader than can play the mental game.  Cardale is not playing the mental game.

Defense: C-
Penalties are killing us.  This defense has been solid all year but they disappointed me this week.  Look no further than the long run by Diamont.  Tyvis Powell absolutely layed an egg by taking the worst angle a safety has ever taken.  Apple continues to get picked on (even though he sealed the win on the final play).  Bell had a so-so game (not like his solid games of the recent past). The front seven was actually pretty good, but the big plays can't happen.  Glad to see Perry and McMillan stop the leading rusher in the conference. Early in the game, there was a huge miscommunication that can't happen on a long pass to a receiver.  Too sloppy for me.

Special Teams: B+
Nothing special.  Some nice punts and punt coverage.  Dropping the ball into the endzone on the punt was a huge swing that can't happen.  Overall...another mediocre performance (which I'm fine with).  They didn't cost us anything which is a win in my Special Teams book.

Coaching: D
Play calling is still an absolute joke.  Know your personnel when formulating a gameplan.  I'm not a 'give it to Zeke on every play' guy, but I support more north south running with Zeke and more short quick hitter passes (which don't seem to be in the playbook).  I'm also a fan (especially against the 126th ranked pass defense in the nation) of a few chuck it up and let your receiver go get it...you know the entire offense during the playoff for Cardale.  Yes, Devin Smith is gone, but even an arm punt isn't terrible at times when there's the chance of a homerun.  I don't think we threw a single deep bomb all game.  THAT'S WHAT CARDALE'S STRENGTH IS!!

Overall: D+
Maybe Indiana is secret good.  Maybe not.  Doesn't matter to me.  This Buckeye team can't roll it out there like that and hope to win every game.  You're either getting better or getting worse...and I don't see us getting better.  Next week is definitely good for what ails you in Maryland.  They are butt, and we must expose them for what they are (hehe).  JT, I love you.  Come back to us...

Week 5 - B1G East Battle

Standings
1) Seeberg               14-5    (0-4 upset)
2) Draper                 13-6    (3-1 upset)
2) Schweinfurth     13-6    (1-2 upset)
4) Hoying                11-8    (1-3 upset)

What a difference a year makes. After the end of nonconference play last season, the only undefeated B1G team was Penn State. This year, 5 out of the 29 remaining undefeated teams call the Big Ten their home. But only two meet this week as conference play kicks off in earnest.

West Virginia Mountaineers @ Oklahoma Sooners
Draper: Another Oklahoma game...where is it? Norman? These are the games Stoops usually wins.  Oklahoma has been tested in Knoxville (how good are the Vols? Don't know) but WVU has played the Little Sisters of the Poor.  I don't know how good either of these teams are, but I'll lean Perine and the Sooners in Norman.  WVU: 27 -- OU: 34
Hoying: You thought Bert and the 'Backs had a tough schedule? Try West Virginia. The Mountaineers kick off the first of 4 ranked matchups in October with a visit to Norman. Oklahoma had a nice comeback win against Tennessee, but last week the Gators showed us that any washed-up has-been former power can do the same. Meanwhile, West Virginia doesn't seem to be missing QB Clint Trickett, with Skyler Howard stepping in to lead one of the nation's top passing attacks. Beating West Virginia requires competent defense, and after Oklahoma gave up 38 to Tulsa, I'm not sure they can do it. The Sooners enter a land of confusion, and West Virginia gets a victory against all odds. WVU: 34--OU: 31
Schweinfurth: I feel like Oklahoma has fallen into the Big 12 trap of good offense, no defense. West Virginia has been doing that dance for years and are used to putting up big offensive numbers. I also feel that the Sooners are still settling into this new Air Raid system and are not running the ball enough. I give the edge to WVU, but they have a rough next few weeks. WVU: 42-OU: 38

Seeberg:  Not likely to see a whole lot of "D" in this one.  Oklahoma's win over the Vols has been cheapened by their second unconscionable 4th-quarter collapse against Florida last week, but that doesn't mean Oklahoma isn't still the better team in this matchup.  The Sooners are historically woeful on the road in any early-season matchup of consequence, but they got that monkey off their back by taking down rocky top, and back at home you can expect a better performance.  I like WVU and think they're a bit underrated personally, and in Morgantown I might give them the edge, but not in Norman.  Boomer Sooner survives a shootout  WVU: 42--OU: 45

Iowa Hawkeyes @ Wisconsin Badgers
Draper:  Are either of these teams any good? Iowa is undefeated after a long FG to beat Pitt while Wisconsin's 'feather in the cap' is losing to Bama.  Who do I trust more? I don't really like either of these teams, but Kirk Ferentz has had too many bad to mediocre years to give any credence to until I have more evidence.  In Madison? Edge Badgers.  Iowa: 14--Wisconsin: 24
Hoying: Remember when Nebraska ran Bo Pelini out on a rail for winning no fewer than 9 games for 7 straight seasons? Iowa hasn't won 9 games since 2009, but the Hawkeyes may be poised to make a run this year. Iowa swept their nonconference slate for the first time in 6 years, and they drew powerhouses Indiana and Maryland from the BEast this year. But if they want to face our beloved Bucks under the lights in Indy, they'll have to get by a Wisconsin team that doesn't run the ball. That's as confusing as, well, Iowa still being relevant in October. Paul Chryst's growing pains continue as Kirk steals one in Madison. Iowa: 17--Wisc: 16

Schweinfurth: Iowa got past Iowa State for the first time in ever a few weeks ago. I still don't trust the Hawkeyes. This game is going to be a fight in the trenches and Wisconsin typically has the bulls to win that fight. Iowa: 14--Wisc: 17
Seeberg:  Iowa's unbeaten?  Color me shocked.  The Hawkeyes even have 2 wins over power 5 opponents, though a 3-point home win against Pitt barely qualifies.  (Man, I hope Mark May reads that).  The Badgers are struggling to find an identity on offense but have given up a measly 3 points in their last 3 games combined.  If my math skills serve me right, that's only an extra point per contest.  Iowa broke out offensively last week against North Texas but, well, that's North Texas.  Bucky reestablishes himself as the mascot to beat out west.  IOWA: 13--WISC: 24

Alabama Crimson Tide @ Georgia Bulldogs

Draper:  The streak of 6 straight years of Nick Saban and the Tide being favorites has come to an end.  Will the Bulldogs further dethrone the Bad Boys of the SEC? Will UGA ever not disappoint in the big game under Richt? There will be some fantastic running back play in this play with Nick Chubb and Derrick Henry.  The question is: Will Lane Kiffin remember Henry is on the team? I think we're seeing a decline in the Bama juggernaut and Georgia gets the win at home (only to crap it away in a few weeks). Ala: 27 -- UGA: 31
Hoying: In order to beat Crimson Tide under Nick Saban, you either need to play a near-perfect game or be
a near-perfect team (or play them in his first year there, but that ship sailed 8 years ago). We saw the former in the Tide's second consecutive loss to Ole Miss (no, the Rebels aren't going to the playoff this year). Is Georgia the latter? The Bulldogs certainly look the part, riding Nick Chubb and an elite ground game to 4 blowout wins over teams that Bret Bielema would complain about and then lose to. The passing game isn't spectacular, but it's better than the hot mess brewing behind center in Tuscaloosa. If Lane Kiffin can finally learn to trust his stud RBs and stop throwing the ball, Alabama will come away with a victory. Never bet against Lane. Ala: 31--UGA: 24
Schweinfurth: Georgia can run the ball and Nick Chubb is a beast. For some reason, Lane Kiffin has a allergy to running the ball. Oh wait, he is Lane Kiffin. In Saban's last two losses, his team has just been beaten up front. I think Georgia is the more physical team and Mark Richt finally gets the Saban monkey off his back. Ala: 20--UGA: 28
Seeberg:  I hate to disagree with my colleague Mr. Hoying, but I intentionally bet against Lane last week and it worked out.  JUST GIVE DERRICK HENRY THE BLEEPING BALL.  Will he figure it out this week?  I honestly don't know.  What I do know is that Greyson Lambert has only attempted 17 throws per game in Georgia's 4-0 start because Nick Chubb and Co. are ramming the running game down everyone's throat.  As good as their ground attack is I have trouble believing that much one-dimensionality can cause sustained problems for the Bama D.  Despite a 7:0 TD-int ratio this year, Lambert for his career is just 18:13.  I think Bama's D will rattle him and make a couple plays to bail out Kiffin's consistently head-scratching play calling and, unfortunately, put the Crimson Tide back in the hunt to be beaten in the playoff again.  ALA: 28--UGA: 23

Kansas State Wildcats @ Oklahoma State Cowboys

Draper: Has anyone actually seen a K-State game this year?  All I know about these teams is the the Pokes squeaked out a close win in Austin last week so I feel more confident with them.  Bill Snyder is known for scheduling (through Kansas State) cupcakes to start the year, so 4-0 is never a shock. The undefeated season comes to a halt in Stillwater.  KSU: 20--OSU: 34
Hoying: I apologize for putting this game on the list, but K-State is still undefeated after a classic Bill Snyder non-conference slate: South Dakota, UTSA, and Louisiana Tech. Oklahoma State almost faceplanted against a bad Texas team and need to find their footing if they're going to keep pace in a deep Big XII. OSU QB Mason Rudolph leads a Cowboy offense that has sputtered at time, failing to reach 40 (I'm a man!) in 3 of their 4 games. I think they'll again have trouble hitting that mark, but an improved defense should keep the Wildcats at bay. KSU: 20--OSU: 31
Schweinfurth: Not sure how this one plays out due to the fact that I only know who the coaches of these teams are. I do know that Mike Gundy typically has a pretty good offense, so I'll pick the Cowboys out of my hat. KSU: 21--OSU: 30
Seeberg:  Tough to figure this one out.  Kansas State has taken the mantle from Baylor as the most pathetic nonconference schedule known to man to get to 3-0.  Okla State looked rough against a Texas team that can suddenly score the ball a little, but squeaked out the W to stay unbeaten as well.  Ironically, the Big 12's OSU has had a similar arc to our beloved Buckeyes this year:  Highly touted offense that has struggled at times, but a D with question marks that has actually played half-decent.  Add that to the fact that K-State gave up 33 at home to Louisiana Tech and you've got yourself a 5-0 Cowboys squad by Saturday's end.  KSU: 24--OSU: 34

Ole Miss Rebels @ Florida Gators

Draper: Ole Miss is going to tout that win over Bama forever...even though they got super lucky and we don't know if Bama is 'world beater' of the recent past.  That being said...Florida? Really? Yeah, they're undefeated but you spell mirage G-A-T-O-R-S.  The game will be shockingly close in the 3rd but the Rebs pull away late.  Miss: 28 -- UF: 16
Hoying: Is Florida a historically mediocre program buoyed by two all-time great coaches: Spurrier and Meyer? Or are they a top-tier mainstay that only incompetent hacks like the Zooker and big dumb Will Muschamp can wreck? The post-Muschamp Gators have yet to lose a game, but the competition ramps up in a hurry. The Rebels, the hottest team east of Utah, are looking to avoid the post-Alabama meltdown that wrecked their playoff hopes last season. That quest will end eventually, but not this week, no matter how loud Jim McElwain screams. Miss--31--UF: 13
Schweinfurth: Florida is still rebuilding and Ole Miss looks like the class of the SEC right now. Miss: 35--UF: 20
Seeberg:  Really?  A last-minute win over a we-forget-games-have-four-quarters Tennessee squad is enough to put the Gators in the top 25?  Ridiculous.  Thankfully that will be a short-lived issue as the Rebels come to town sporting the only team in the top ten in both offensive and defensive efficiency- even after meeting the overlord Bama.  Rebels make quick work of this one.  MISS: 45--FLA: 17

Notre Dame Fighting Irish @ Clemson Tigers
Draper: Did I say mirage? That is the theme of this game.  I believe both of these teams may be mirages, but Notre Dame's claim to fame was taking down the Jackets...who subsequently lost to Duke.  This is when the Irish rubber meets the road and Clemson's Death Valley is the 3rd loudest stadium I've ever been to (behind the Swamp and the Shoe).  Dabo tries to blow it, but this is the game in which the Domers fall from glory.  Clemson's day will come, but it will not be this day.  ND: 21 -- Clemson: 31
Hoying: When will Notre Dame's injuries finally catch up with them? The crew at Let's Go Bucks! unanimously picked the Irish to crash and burn against GT after losing Malik Zaire, but the Jackets rambled and wrecked their way to a loss in South Bend. ND's fate may change as they leave the friendly confines and enter "Death Valley." Clemson has 3 okay wins against 3 bad teams, but they have all of 2 home losses in the last 4 years. Notre Dame doesn't travel particularly well, and they don't have the horses to move the ball on an improved Tiger defense. Pick the home team. ND: 20--Clem: 35
Schweinfurth: At some point, all of these injuries have to catch up with the Irish. I think it is this week. Both offenses move the ball well and neither team plays great defense. Time for a shootout in Death Valley. ND: 42--Clem: 49
Seeberg:  I've actually been very impressed with Clemson this year.  They seem to be playing a reasonable facsimile of...oh crap what's the word?  Oh yeah.  DEFENSE.  Though their offense struggled against the only 1-A opponent they've played to date, the Golden Domer D is more porous than in recent years.  And quite frankly, I just don't like them either; however, I thoroughly enjoy the Tiger Rag, so I gotta go with #soybeanwind (it's an anagram for Dabo Swinney that I sadly cannot take credit for, but if you aren't watching Last Week Tonight clips on youtube the following day like everybody not fortunate enough to have HBO then SHAME ON YOU...and go watch it!).  ND: 20--CLEM: 31

THE Ohio State University Buckeyes @ Indiana Hoosiers

Draper: Will the Buckeye offense ever figure it out? This is the (fifth straight) week in which they should.  Let's be real here.  IU has an offense.  Sudfeld is a good QB and Kevin Wilson can coach offense, but the Hoosier defense is a steaming pile of cow dung.  117th in the country in total defense after the murderer's row of Southern Illinois, FIU, Western Kentucky, and Wake Forest.  If the Bucks don't break 50, I'll be extremely disappointed. While the D gives up more than most will be comfortable with, Cardale hits some of those bombs he missed last week and the Bucks keep it going.  OSU: 62 -- IU: 30

Hoying: For the fourth time this year, the Bucks enter a battle of unbeatens. But this game is a really, really, B1G deal. You may have seen that Ohio State and Indiana haven't faced each other unblemished since 1954. What you probably don't know is that that was the season opener! The Buckeyes and Hoosiers haven't met with both teams better than 1-0...EVER. Ohio State doesn't lose to Indiana often, but the wins have not come easily under Urban Meyer. Letting Tevin Coleman run all over you is understandable, but allowing Xander Diamont to have success throwing the ball is not. This year, the Hoosiers have Nate Sudfeld back and might lead the best offense the Bullets will face this regular season. Don't expect Cardale to struggle against another vintage Indiana defense, but the Hoosiers have just enough weapons to make this one interesting. The good news is, there's no reason at all for Ohio State to be looking ahead. On to 5-0. OSU: 42--IU: 24
Schweinfurth: Laugh at this all you want, but I think the Western Michigan game was a great tune up for Indiana. Both teams like to throw quick passes to the outside and then run inside zone from a wide open spread. This exposed the Buckeye interior defense, but I expect this coaching staff to make the adjustment. Now that the QB situation is finally settled, Cardale can get all the reps in practice and lock those deep bombs in. The receivers had separation last week and they should be able to get behind the leaky Hoosiers' secondary. It's B1G season so it's time to hammer Zeke and stop getting cute with the "Globetrotter Offense." OSU: 49--IU: 21
Seeberg:
The good from last week:  The offense looked better, the special teams improved as well.  The bad?  The D looked worse.  Getting into conference play, I fear the Huskies may have exposed some weaknesses.  Specifically, teams can score on us if centers don't shoot their teams in the foot.  In any event, Indiana can typically score it well the past few years, and they give up points equally well.  This should be a matchup that will test the Silver Bullets but allow the offense to begin to hit its stride.  What's a Hoosier anyway?  OSU: 45--IU: 20

Grading the Bucks--Week 13: Indiana

Offense: B
J.T. had another 'eh' game.  He missed too many open receivers that can't happen against a better team.  I love him, but he hasn't been as ridiculously good as he was early in the season.  He's still a stud, but he needs to become more consistent. The first pick was horrible.  The second wasn't his fault (yes, a little high, but the ball should have been caught). The big issue is turnovers. Was the Michael Thomas play a fumble? I'm not sure.  But I do know we should have scored at will on the Hoosiers.  See the first drive as an example.  The O-line wasn't up to par as they should have DOMINATED the IU line. Zeke was pretty non-existent after the first big run.  Oh yeah, that Heuerman guy is pretty darn good.

Defense: B
Stop. Missing. Tackles.  This is an epidemic that must be stopped.  Overall, the Buckeyes bottled up Coleman for most of the game (ignoring those two HUGE runs).  The long run by the (non-mobile) QB on 3rd and 11 was inexcusable.  Stop there and the game is a blowout from the start.  The D-line sleepwalked through the game.  Secondary was pretty good, but this run D must improve before Melvin Gordon (or David Cobb again).  This team's defensive woes come down to one thing...big plays.  If we can limit those, this team can do some great things.

Special Teams: Yoyo but C+
Jalin Marshall returning a punt for a TD => Good.  Jalin Marshall nonchalantly hopping over a bouncing punt on the way to the sideline => Bad.  Marshall calling for a fair catch, picking up the bouncing ball on the 5 => BAD.  KICKOFF OUT OF BOUNDS AGAIN => BAAAADDDD.  I get the strategy about pinning the opposing team inside the 25 on kickoffs, but the kicker can't keep it in bounds.  The risk isn't worth it.   The bright spot was another fantastic day by Cameron Johnston.  The punt that checked up at the 2 was beautiful.  And bad to bad...another missed FG.  GET BETTER!

Coaching: C+
JT was struggling but there seemed to be no commitment to running the ball.  I still don't get this coaching staff.  Also, IU apparently was the first team to watch OSU film and realized that Herman ALWAYS calls a QB Power run from an empty set on 3rd and 1.  Predictability isn't a good thing for the coach (granted, OSU should be able to tell IU what the play is and still have it work). Defensively, there is a bit too much overpursuit.  Aggressiveness is not always a good thing.

Overall: B-
It was a 15 point game overall a bad-OK IU team.  The Hoosiers this year are better than in the past, but Coleman is a special player (that Gordon has overshadowed).  That being said, the Bucks didn't play their best and got it done.  Also, everyone points out that the score wasn't indicative of the game saying it was a lot closer...don't forget, Coleman broke another long TD in garbage time.  Yes, it was close in the 3rd, but the score may have actually been CLOSER than it was.

Now, nothing else matters....GO BUCKS! BEAT BLUE!

Week 13 - Low Pressure System

Standings
1) Draper               36-18    (5-7 upset)
2) Hoying               35-19    (3-9 upset)
3) Seeberg              34-20    (1-11 upset)
4) Schweinfurth     33-21    (5-7 upset)

In meteorology, a low pressure system moving into your region of the atmosphere means that a storm will soon be coming.* In this week's college football landscape, the huge number of games that suck creates an atmosphere of very low pressure for the playoff contenders, with a huge storm on the horizon over the following two weeks.

In the meantime, we focus on the Pac-12 South and B1G West races, with 5 and 4 teams still in the running, respectively.

*Yes, meteorology people, I know, this is a bit of an over-generalization. Please withhold your angry comments.

#22 USC Trojans "@" #10 UCLA Bruins
Draper: UCLA is getting better every week and has wuietly entered the top 10.  SC on the other hand seems to have faded over the season. Hundley is looking pretty good, but more importantly, the line is protecting him...a little.  Kessler is having a nice season, but consistency is an issue.  I'm leaning on the hot hand right now which points to the Bruins.  I don't feel great about it, but Sark hasn't shaken the Earth in LA.  UCLA has too much to play for with a potential rematch with the Ducks in their grasp.  USC: 31--UCLA: 38
Hoying: Five teams vie for the Pac-12 South crown; only UCLA controls its own destiny. First hurdle: its biggest rival, the only conference opponent against whom the Bruins have a losing record. UCLA proudly proclaimed that "the LA monopoly is over" back in 2008, but that prophecy didn't come true until the script flipped 2 years ago. Now it's the Trojans who are struggling, giving up late TDs to Utah and Arizona State and needing a last-second missed FG to get by Arizona. Not that UCLA's been banking style points either, needing 2OTs to get by awful awful Colorado. Astoundingly, it's USC QB Cody Kessler who's been the star of the Pac-12 South this season, not everybody's preseason Heisman darling, Brett Hundley of UCLA. Will he be enough to overcome a lack of run defense and focus? Not this year. Hundley's escapability will make up for the Bruins' suspect pass protection and lead UCLA to their 3rd straight victory over the hated Trojans. USC: 24--UCLA: 27
Schweinfurth: Ahh, the battle for L.A.  It does appear that the So Cal monopoly is over as USC has trailed off in recent years (thanks Lane Kiffin).  This year has been a bit of resurgence for the Trojans.  Steve Sarkesian has that offense humming along pretty well.  UCLA's offensive line has been brutal this year and Brett Hundley has been taking a beating.  The beatings will continue!  USC: 35--UCLA: 31
Seeberg:  Well, UCLA has the home-field advantage this year so...ok maybe not.  In any event, both teams are quietly picking up wins lately, albeit not particularly impressive wins as both teams struggled to put away Cal (USC winning by 8 at home, UCLA by 2 on the road) and UCLA slept through their tilt with Colorado.  These teams are pretty equally matched up, and with home field a non-issue, I always revert to my default position- pick the team with the better defense.  In this case?  The Trojans.  USC: 31--UCLA: 23

#13 Arizona Wildcats @ Utah Utes
Draper: Can the freshman Solomon keep it going in a tough road environment?  The Utes have been really good at home when they actually carry the ball all the way into the endzone before dropping it.  The downside is that I don't expect the same environment for a game vs. Arizona (even though they're a top 15 team).  Anu Solomon has had a great freshman season in RichRod's system that will only improve (assuming Mr. Rod is still in Tuscon next year).  I think this is going to come down to the wire with another last second win for the Cardiac Cats. Zona: 34--Utah: 31
Hoying: Can you win in the Pac-12 without throwing the ball? It's not like the Utes had a terrific aerial assault early in the season, but since the loss of top receiver Dres Anderson, they've really dropped off, falling in 2 of their last 3 games (and winning the third in double overtime). Arizona's Anu Solomon is more of what you'd expect from a west coast offense, leading one of the nation's top 15 pass attacks and easily one of the most exciting, executing incredible comebacks against Cal and Washington and coming a field goal away from stunning USC. This game's not being played against a Los Angeles team, so the Wildcats should be safe, and RichRod should stay in the hunt for his first conference title. Zona: 31--Utah: 20
Schweinfurth: I don't know much about these two teams, so I am going to grandstand a bit.  I feel that the east coast, and the country as a whole, would appreciate the Pac-12 if the games didn't start after the 8:00 games ended.  I like college football and all, but between life and sleep, I can devote a maximum of around 6-10 hours on Saturdays to football.  That means the really late games are off the table for my viewing pleasure.  Start some games before 8:00 and I will gladly watch. Oh, Zona wins.  Zona: 42--Utah: 35
Seeberg:  From the surprisingly-decent-second-tier-conference-matchup file comes this game.  Sadly, the game would have been much more competitive before Utah's one-dimensional offense has cost them two of their last three games.  Arizona is hanging their hat on that head-scratching Oregon win and the Wildcats would have likely struggled in this game against a healthy Utah squad.  A dinged up Ute team, however, means the Wildcats continue their unlikely run to compete for the Pac-12 South.  Zona: 38--Utah: 24

Minnesota Golden Gophers @ #18 Nebraska Cornhuskers
Draper: Let's see...Nebraska is 8-2 with 2 to go.  To reach that non-elusive 9-4 they need 1 win and 2 losses (including the bowl).  All signs point to loss, win, loss...but NO! Bo Pelini gets the troops fired up to defend the home turf against David Cobb.  This is a pride game.  The 'Blackshirts' were embarrassed by a guy named Malvin last week.  Cobb is a great runner, but I don't see the Huskers falling flat on their faces again in their last home game.  Hey Bo, Give. Ameer. the. rock.  Over and over.  Cobb will go for 130 and 2 TDs, but Ameer will hit 200 all-purpose yards and 3 TDs. Minn: 27--Neb: 31
Hoying: Boy, is this game a lot less appealing than it was a week ago. These teams have a ton of wins against a ton of suck and a few losses against some very good teams, but now it's time to see what they'll do during their late-season stretch run. What did we learn from two games in the snow? 1. Minnesota can't move the ball against a good defense, aside from breaking a few good runs. 2. Nebraska doesn't have a good defense, particularly against the run. 3. JT Barrett and Melvin Gordon are really good (sneak preview of a game prediction 2 weeks from now). Since his injury, Nebraska RB Ameer Abdullah has been a non-factor, while his Gopher counterpart David Cobb keeps getting stronger. Can a team that doesn't throw the ball beat the Huskers? DUUUUUUHHHHH. Minn: 30--Neb: 27
Schweinfurth: Holy crap did the Blackshirts get exposed my Melvin Gordon last week.  That was a truly abysmal performance against a team that lines up and practically says, "We are running up the middle...stop it if you can."  This week the Huskers face another team that likes to run.  From what I could see last week, David Cobb is the real deal.  You have to wrap that guy up and Nebraska has gotten into this arm tackle thing.  Not a good combination for Nebraska.  Throw in the fact that Ameer Abdullah hasn't looked right since his injury and it all spells out a Gopher win.  Minn: 35--Neb: 21
Seeberg:  Let's be honest- we need Minnesota to win this one to keep our victory over them looking good in the eyes of the football deities that ultimately decide our postseason fate.  Fortunately, they are playing a team that just gave up 57 kajillion yards on the ground (Note:  Statistic is an estimate...likely an underestmation).  Minnesota's O-line may not be quite as good as Wisconsin's, nor their RB, but Cobb is very solid and should have another highly productive day.  Abdullah still hasn't been himself since tweaking his knee, and without him healthy and confident, Nebraska doesn't have enough answers on offense.  Minnesota, at least for a week, not a disgrace.  Minn: 34--Neb: 24

#14 Wisconsin Badgers @ Iowa Hawkeyes
Draper: Gordon. Bulldozer.  This one could get ugly...but it won't be as disgusting as last week.  Iowa is at home which will help keep it a bit closer.  I expect Gordon to get his, but everyone will be shocked that he doesn't explode.  The Hawkeyes will completely overload the box with all 11 guys...and still give up over 100--but not 400.  I have a weird feeling that this will be closer than the experts think, but not that close all the same.  The Badgers have too much to play for.  Wisc: 31--Iowa: 17
Hoying: Minnesota ran for 291 yards against Iowa. Uh oh. Wis: 45--Iowa: 17
Schweinfurth: See Hoying's stat and add in that Wisconsin ran for 581 against Nebraska.  Yea, uh oh indeed.  Gordon could go for 300+ again.  Wis: 49--Iowa: 14
Seeberg:  The only real question here is how well Melvin Gordon backs up his historic performance last week.  Iowa's enormous collapse against Minnesota two weeks ago, losing by a whopping 37, is unlikely to happen again.  Unfortunately for the Hawkeyes, Wisconsin is a lot better than them, mistakes or not.  Gordon needs another 150+, 2 TD+ game to push Mariota off his Heisman pedestal, and he will likely get it at the expense of a porous Hawkeye run D.  Wis: 38--Iowa: 20

Indiana Hoosiers @ #7 THE Ohio State University Buckeyes
Draper: Telvin Coleman is having one of the best years for a running back that no one has heard about.  He went for 300+ last week...and no one cares.  JT and company return to the friendly confines to the acclaim of Buckeye Nation.  I have a feeling this will be very similar to the recent home B1G games in which the Bucks jump out to an early lead, take the game in hand, and sit back and take a nap (which will be disappointing).  Bosa and the front seven need to treat this as an important learning experience to practice for Gordon.  They need to step up and contain Coleman.  IU is on their 15th string QB so just focus on stopping the run.  That should be the goal of the game along with cleaning up the tackling.  Hold Coleman under 100 and I'll be thrilled.  You're either getting better, or you're getting worse.  OSU: 52--IU: 24
Hoying: The Hoosiers are quickly running out of chances to win a conference game, but the news isn't all bad. Sure, they visit one of the hottest teams in the nation this week, but next week they get Purdue! At home! And even if the Hoosiers' dreams don't come true against the B1G's version of Make a Wish, they'll still have that SEC East title to fall back on. Indiana is as good as running the ball as anyone in the country, unless your goal is to make sure the ball goes across the goal line at some point. And they're horrible at everything else. Ohio State is pretty good at everything except tackling running backs and preventing the ghost of Ray Small from possessing their punt returners. Bucks win big and start their streak as the only team to win the B1G East. Ind: 20--OSU: 59
Schweinfurth:  A little #narrative to start off: Indiana beat the SEC East leader.  The Buckeyes have been flat rolling inferior teams (and teams that were "better" than them) since the Va Tech game.  Last week's score was no indication of how dominant the Buckeyes were.  The only concerning thing to me is the defense on quick turnarounds (after turnovers especially).  No matter where they start on the field after a Buckeye turnover, it seems like the other team always gets points.  This is a trend that really needs to stop.  The defense has played very well for the most part but the Bullets need to stop the run.  This will be a good practice for the Buckeyes ahead of TTUN and, most likely, Wisconsin.  Time to shore up the run D and keep that offense sharp.  Barrett keeps putting up his video game numbers as well.  This is a style point game. Ind: 13--OSU: 52
Seeberg:  Ah yes, it's our favorite homecoming team come to town six weeks late.  The Hoosiers actually boast a legitimate NFL-caliber running back in Tevin Coleman, and the Silver Bullets have struggled with the power run game in consecutive weeks.  Thankfully, IU is on their 2nd-string practice squad QB at this point and Coleman is their only competent threat on offense.  The turnovers need to be cleaned up, but even if we lose the ball multiple times again it's just not going to matter.  Onto TTUN.  IND: 17--OSU: 52

Grading the Bucks--Week 13: Indiana

Offense: B+
42 points is nice, but the Hoosier defense is atrocious.  This should have been much, MUCH worse.  I know the weather sucked, but Braxton's passes have been poor of late.  In general, I've not been thrilled with Miller's play, especially the propensity to fumble.  This HAS to improve (I'm shocked it's not a higher point of focus). Hyde was a normal beast and became the first Urban Meyer running back to cross the 1000 yard barrier...in 8 games.  Ride the horse, but the passing game needs to be a threat, especially against the Spartans.  Dantonio would have no qualms stacking the box against us.

Defense: B+
The defense held a better than people know IU offense to 14 which is no easy task.  However, it was the way they gave it up that concerns me.  When the team was focused, they played quite well, but the second half showed me a team that had checked out.  Yeah, the game was over, but you play until the clock reads 0:00.  Shoutout to Ryan Shazier and his monster performance--he was excellent and deserves his latest accolade of Butkus finalist.  I'm still concerned with the DBs playing such soft coverage but I don't see that hurting us until the bowl game.

Special Teams: A
All I really remember was a blocked punt by Roby (which I saw coming at the snap).  Other than that, no missed kicks or good returns.  Woo special teams!

Coaching: C
OK, Urban.  The game was over early in the second half.  WHY IN THE WORLD IS YOUR STAR QUARTERBACK IN A SNOWY GAME? People in Columbus need to get it through their skulls that style points don't matter.  If OSU wins out, they'll play in the Rose Bowl or Championship Game if Bama/FSU falter.  That's it.  That's the story.  Also, there was no reason to 'get that trick play on film'.  Braxton and Kenny on the field together is nice, but why not spring it on TSUN? The surprise factor is better than the 'prep for it' factor.  Oh yeah, Braxton had a wide open TE and chose to somersault into the endzone and land on his head....woof.  I get not wanting to handle his QB with kid gloves, but those plays/decisions were just detrimental to the team.

Overall: B+
Another game, another blowout win.  Onto That School Up North.  The season has officially started now GO BUCKS! BEAT BLUE!

Week 13--A few good ones before the big rivalries

Standings
1) Schweinfurth    36-16    (4-8 upset)
2) Hoying               34-18   (1-11 upset)
3) Draper             33-19      (3-9 upset) --KNOCK IT DOWN GEORGIA!!! That's what I get for going on a limb

Baylor Bears @ Oklahoma State Sooners
Draper: Ok Baylor, you passed the first test vs. Oklahoma, but the Pokes might be the better option from the Sooner State this year.  Oklahoma State isn't a world beater (see WVU), but fans in Stillwater can get a little rowdy (my Uncle Chip can heckle with the best of them).  Imagine if you will, that the Cowboys don't gag a cheap game in Morgantown...this is a top 5 matchup with OkState favored!  The Pokes have an explosive ground game and fairly good defense.  Baylor has been murdering everyone, but their defense leaves much to be desired.  I think the magic of T. Boone ends the 'threat' to the Buckeyes and Baylor drops their first of the year in a shootout.  BU: 42--OSU: 45
Hoying: Can Baylor handle success? Fresh off a huge win over Oklahoma, the Bears looked lost in the early goings against a mediocre Texas Tech team, but they quickly regrouped and came away with a convincing victory. A lack of focus against the Cowboys will not so easily be forgiven. The Bears don't have much road experience, and they looked quite vulnerable against a middling Kansas State team in Manhattan. Meanwhile, Oklahoma State is riding high amidst a terrific November highlighted by a dismantling of Texas. Baylor is favored by about 10, but that's garbage, and the editor who let it come out is garbage. The dream season in Waco comes to an end and ESPN never gets to find out if Ohio State would've been jumped. BU: 34--OSU: 38
Schweinfurth: Can the Baylor Bears handle success and a very tough schedule to end the season.  In all honesty, Baylor is the best team in the Big 12 but still must out score teams to win, which hasn't been a problem.  Oklahoma State is one team that can score with the Bears and not break a sweat.  This will be high scoring to the finish and the Baylor schedule finally catches up to them.  BU: 49--OSU: 52

Texas A&M Aggies @ Louisiana State Tigers
Draper: Which of these teams is less disappointing?  Both dropped a game vs. Bama (A&M was closer but it was at home).  LSU has the worst loss (Ole Miss) but the best win (Auburn).  The game is in Death Valley and the Tigers have proven to get a stop once in a while.  Manziel has put up fantastic numbers, but the A&M defense is the difference...they're terrible.  Johnny Football will have a nice game that will have ESPiN talking Heisman (even though Jameis has it locked barring disaster), but Mettenburger will carve up the atrocious Aggie defense.  Another high scoring game in the 'defense-oriented' SEC.  TAMU: 31--LSU: 38
Hoying: If you want to beat Johnny, you have to stop Johnny. Alabama and Auburn didn't stop him much, but they were able to do just enough to slow him down while their high-powered offenses shredded a terrible, terrible, TERRIBLE A&M defense. Zach BobaFettenburger and the LSU offense have the explosive power to stay competitive with Johnny Hancock, but the standard LSU brick wall D isn't there this year. Mr. Heisman stays in contention to join the exclusive Archie Griffin club if Famous Jameis follows a long proud line of FSU QB's kicked off the roster. TAMU: 45--LSU: 38
Schweinfurth: Has anyone actually noticed that LSU is a 3 loss team.  Don't forget that the Aggies' defense isn't very good.  Mettenberger and Manziel should put up some good numbers for that reason.  The big difference in this game will be Les Miles. Because he's dumb.  I expect him to make a stupid decision at some point in this game that will give the Aggies good field position.  TAMU: 35--LSU: 30

Wisconsin Badgers @ Minnesota Golden Gophers
Draper: The fact that this game is up here is a tribute to the amazing season the Gophers have put together.  Wisconsin has looked very good, but has no wins of note (yes...ASU, but I see an L by their name).  Beating Minnesota might be the biggest win for the Badgers this year...oh what a world. Minnesota keeps winning with no particular standout player/unit.  They play sound football under OC Claeys (which is a tribute to Coach Kill), but I don't think they can stop the Badger rushing attack.  Melvin Gordon, James White, and AbbyDooby keep the ax and eliminate the Gophers from Legends contention (although this is the best year for Minn in a long time).  Wisc: 34--Minn: 24
Hoying: Did you see what Wisconsin did to Indiana? Yes, yes, I know, it's Indiana, but the Badgers took a team averaging 40 points a game and held them to 3. Not even Ohio State does that in the B1G. Minnesota is a fun success story, but the Badgers have been crushing their (mostly terrible) competition after 2 tough losses to good teams. The Gophers will fight to keep it close, but Wisconsin is clearly the better team.  Wisc: 28--Minn: 20
Schweinfurth: The Gophers have 8 wins? Who saw that one coming? With that said, I do believe Minnesota is starting to turn a corner.  However, they are just starting to turn that corner.  Wisconsin is just ground and pound juggernaut. Wisconsin just flat pounds teams with that massive (fat) offensive line followed by the quickness of White and Gordon.  Abredarous will do enough to keep the Minnesota defense honest and Wisconsin pounds out 400 yards on the ground again.  Hoist that Ax Badgers. Wisc: 35--Minn: 17

Arizona State Sun Devils @ UCLA Bruins
Draper: Hundley and Company have had a very nice season in LA with no bad losses...but no good wins either (Nebraska...please).  The Sun Devils dropped one in South Bend but have the 'win' over Wisconsin.  These teams are fairly even but I like the team with the better QB which has to be UCLA.  The game being in Pasadena doesn't hurt either.  I'll be honest, I know very little/nothing about ASU, but this will make the Pac 12 South a lot of fun.  ASU: 30--UCLA: 34
Hoying: Get ready for some points on the scoreboard, folks. Both teams feature terrific QB play, and neither team's defense is quite good enough to slow the other down. Pac-12 refs will be officiating this one, so any outcome is possible, but I have a hunch that the Sun Devil offense will be slightly more prolific. Arizona State takes the Pac-12 South and prepares to face Oregon. ASU: 38--UCLA: 31
Schweinfurth: I know this game should be an entertaining one (is Gus Johnson calling this game?).  Outside of that, I really know very little about each team.  I do know that Hundley is a very good QB and ASU was gifted a win this year.  I'll take the Bruins. ASU: 38--UCLA: 42

Missouri Tigers @ Ole Miss Rebels
Draper: Ole Miss and Dr. Bo Wallace have the feather in their cap for beating LSU, but they are wildly inconsistent.  The Tigers, on the other hand, have been a model of consistency (other than the second half vs. South Carolina).  No one knows how they keep winning, but they do, even with Maty Mauk. I think the train keeps rolling in Oxford with the Tigers quietly winning with good defense and consistent game-managing offense.  OleMiss: 17--Mizzou: 31
Hoying: Remember when Missouri QB James Franklin went down in that huge win over Georgia? Since then, the Tigers have inexplicably gotten better, just a botched chip shot field goal away from likely still being undefeated. But now the West comes calling, leading off with red-hot Mississippi. The Rebs have a nice win over LSU but have feasted on a steady diet of crap since then. Missouri is a lot more similar to the Alabama, Auburn, and A&M that conquered Ole Miss than the Idaho, Arkansas, and Troy that have padded the Rebels' record. Y'all are Tiger bait. OleMiss: 24--Mizzou: 41
Schweinfurth: Missouri holds it's SEC title game fate in their black and gold hands.  Whether or not James Franklin plays nor not doesn't matter too much.  Maty Mauk picked up right where Franklin left off and didn't miss a beat.  Yes, Ole' Miss has some very good defensive players but that can't stop this Tiger offense.  Mizzou keeps rolling to the showdown with 'Bama in the SEC championship game.
OleMiss: 20--Mizzou: 38

Indiana Hoosiers @ THE Ohio State University Buckeyes
Draper: I was somewhat nervous about this game a few weeks ago.  The IU offense is no joke and the OSU secondary...well, it is a joke, but the Hoosiers have cooled off fast.  The other benefit is that IU has no defense at all.  The Buckeye offense with Miller and Hyde should steamroll the Hoosiers.  Indiana will score (too much), but it won't be close on Senior Day to matching the Scarlet and Gray (can't say that against Michigan :( ).  Buckeyes finish the home season in style with some Smooth Jazz.  Kenny Guiton will score at least one TD in this game--take it to the bank.  IU: 34--OSU: 65
Hoying: It's Senior Day at Ohio State and what a welcome these Seniors deserve. After having their terrific freshman season wiped out and gutting through a tough sophomore campaign, these Men of the Scarlet and Gray haven't lost a game since. A win in Ohio Stadium over In iana would push the Buckeye winning streak to 23 games, a school record.  Will it happen?  Almost undoubtedly. In iana can score (except against Wisconsin) but there's something missing...oh yes. They left the D out of In iana this season. This game could look like the Cal game, or it might end up looking like Penn State if the Hoosiers make too many mistakes early. Buckeyes get a nice tune-up for 2 games against teams up north. IU: 20--OSU: 59
Schweinfurth: So, did everyone see what Wisconsin did against the Hoosier D last week? How about what Braxton and El Guapo against Illinois.  Yea, we could totally see 600 yards of offense ON THE GROUND.  The way Hyde is running right now would make you think he is one of the best running backs in the nation, and he is.  I fully expect him to blow past the 1,000 yard mark early in this one to provide Urban his first 1,000 yard back and on senior day no less.  Braxton is going to have his way through the air as well(last week was a blip on the radar).  Indiana can move the ball, and I fully expect them to do so (stupid Air Raid offense).  Yet again, the Bucks jump out to a big lead early and don't look back (especially after last week and last year).  Expect some smooth jazz at some point in the first half (maybe even the start?).  IU: 21--OSU: 70

Upset Special
Draper: Chatt over Bama (not really)--I don't know....Toledo over NIU
Hoying: Kansas State over Oklahoma
Schweinfurth: Rutgers over UCF
