Great Moments in Buckeye and Bengal History

Today is October 16th, and the Buckeyes and Bengals are undefeated.

That sentence has been true only once before in the 47-year history of the Cincinnati Bengals. The best combined start for the Buckeyes and Bengals came 40 years ago in 1975.

The 1975 Cincinnati Bengals started 6-0 before falling to the hated Pittsburgh Steelers on November 2nd. The Bengals would lose both of their games against the eventual Super Bowl X champion Steelers on their way to an 11-3 regular season record and a wild-card berth after finishing behind Pittsburgh in the brutal AFC Central Division (with the exception for the 3-11 Browns). QB Ken Anderson led the NFL in passing yards for a second straight year, and the Bengals' leading rusher was named Boobie Clark. Cincinnati promptly lost to the Oakland Raiders in the first round of the playoffs.

The 1975 Ohio State Buckeyes completed a perfect 11-0 regular season, beating That Team Up North for the second straight year for the first time since 1967-68 to cap a 4th straight Big Ten title and their first outright since 1970. Archie Griffin became the first (and to date, only) player to win the Heisman Trophy a second time, despite having his streak of 31 straight 100+ yard rushing games snapped in Ann Arbor and not winning the team MVP award, which went to QB Cornelius Greene. The Buckeyes held the #1 ranking for the majority of the season after beating #13 UCLA in the Coliseum on October 4th. However, Ohio State lost a rematch to the Bruins in the Rose Bowl and finished ranked #4 in both polls.

This season's 6-0 Buckeyes and 5-0 Bengals are reallllly good, but the Bengals will need to knock off the Bills and Steelers, and the Buckeyes will have to conquer Penn State and Rutgers, in order for 2015 to become the greatest Buckeye/Bengal start of all time.

Special congratulations/best wishes are in order for Bengals A.J. Hawk and Mike Nugent, who know a thing or two about undefeated seasons for the Scarlet and Gray.
